“Golf is a good walk spoiled.” -Mark Twain
I think this team would disagree with Mark Twain....
BE A GUARDIAN
Guardian Athletics
Be Courageous
Be Encouraging
Be Helpful
Be Gracious
Be Energetic
Be A Guardian
Be A Guardian - Be Courageous
The big question with courage is: what would make you act when fear is telling you not to act?
While it's different for everyone and your answers will be uniquely yours, I encourage you to look for courage in three primary places:
- Listen to your heart, not your feelings.
There's a difference. Feelings change with the wind. Your heart stays consistent. When your emotions are screaming, listen to the whisper coming from your heart. That's courage speaking. - Focus on your identity, not your image.
Your image is how you want to be seen. Your identity is who you are, regardless of how you're seen. Image is the cover of a book. Identity is what's written on the inside. Fear speaks to your image, courage speaks to your identity. - Follow your purpose, not your impulses.
You're going to have impulses. Some of those impulses will align with your purpose, others will try to pull you away from it. Fear is an impulse, not a purpose. Courage is a purpose, not an impulse.
FROM THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT
Greetings Sports Fans!!
What a week we had this past week in Guardian Athletics and do we have some exciting things moving forward.
First up, sophomore, Lennon Schmidt, has earned a spot at the State Golf Tournament next week as an individual. The Men’s and Women’s teams are playing in the Regional Tournament today where they are hoping to qualify for the State Tournament as teams. Their JV programs wrapped up last week with the JV PIL Finales. The whole men's program had a fun team building Guardian Cup yesterday with the white team prevailing.
Our Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams wrapped up their regular season matches this past week competing against Cleveland and Lincoln. Both teams did well against Cleveland but then fell a little short in their efforts against our cross town rivals, the Lincoln Cardinals. The Varsity teams are headed to the PIL District Tournament that runs Wednesday - Friday at the Portland Tennis Center. Their lower level participants have also completed their seasons. A huge thanks to our coaches for all their hard work and dedication this year!!
Our Softball Program had a big week last week with games against McDaniel, Lincoln, and Franklin. Against McDaniel we came up just short in our efforts. In the game against Lincoln and the Council Crest Cup, it came down to extra innings and we lost 7-8. It was a great game and huge thanks to our head coach, Krissy Govertsen, for a fantastic pre-game ceremony with SW Little League teams, vendors, mascots and a lot of hype! The squad bounced back with a good win on Friday versus Franklin. They have another big week as they face off against Roosevelt, Grant, and Cleveland.
The Varsity Baseball Team had a great week with a bounce back win against Cleveland and a sweep of the series against Jefferson. Massive week for them as they have a two game series against Franklin and then round out PIL play against Grant which could have huge implications for PIL Titles.
Our Track Program ended their regular season this past week with a Senior Celebration and a home meet against Franklin. They, too, have a big week with JV Districts today and Thursday at Cleveland and then Varsity Districts next week at Lincoln.
Our Flag Football Team ended their season on Saturday with a Senior Celebration and big win against Century. They ended their season 5-2 in league and 6-6 overall. What a great experience for our school and community! Thanks Coaches!!
Women’s Lacrosse took down the Lincoln Cardinals this past week and they wrap up regular season play at Lakeridge Tuesday night. They will then be awaiting playoff seedings. Men’s Lacrosse had a huge win against Hood River on Saturday night and now will begin the Cascade Cup playoffs as the #2 seed at home on Thursday vs. West Salem/McNary at 7:00pm.
Great to Be A Guardian!

JV
The JV baseball team battled through a challenging early schedule during the first half of the 2026 season, showing steady growth and resilience as the year progressed. After opening the season with five straight losses against tough competition, the Guardians found their footing with a 9-4 road win over Tigard on March 31. April featured several close contests, including a one-run loss to West Linn and a split doubleheader against Lincoln JV, while the team earned key victories over Hillsboro, La Salle, and South Salem. By May, the group had clearly turned a corner, putting together an impressive winning streak highlighted by dominant victories over Cleveland (10-0), Sandy (16-0), and Dallas (18-5). Through 21 games, Wells compiled a 9-12 record while demonstrating major improvement offensively and defensively.
Offensively, the Guardians were led by a balanced lineup that consistently pressured opponents on the bases and put together quality at-bats. Quinn Daniels emerged as one of the team’s top all-around contributors, batting .311 with a team-leading 16 RBIs and a strong .888 OPS. Landon Sage and Brandon Jacobs both hit above .315, while Henry Rader contributed 21 runs scored and 18 stolen bases. Keaton Stermer and Grayson Allen also provided consistent production near the top of the lineup, combining for 24 hits and 23 runs scored. On the mound, Brandon Castle delivered one of the team’s strongest pitching performances with a 2-0 record, 20 strikeouts, and a 1.20 WHIP in 11.2 innings, while Declan Sagen, Quinn Daniels and Owen Hillesland logged significant innings throughout the spring. Defensively, the Guardians posted a .920 fielding percentage and continued to improve their consistency in the field as the season developed. With confidence growing and momentum building after a strong May stretch, Ida B. Wells enters the last few games of the season playing its best baseball of the year.
JV2
JV2 baseball team has shown tremendous growth compiling a 10-9-2 record against a challenging schedule. The team closed April and opened May with an impressive five-game winning streak, highlighted by dominant victories over McDaniel, Cleveland, and Benson Tech in which Ida B. Wells outscored opponents 59-15. Offensively, the team has been aggressive and productive, scoring 166 runs while stealing 103 bases at a 90% success rate, demonstrating both athleticism and pressure on the basepaths.
Several players have emerged as key contributors on both sides of the ball. Finn Noveshen has paced the offense with a .388 batting average, 21 RBI, and a team-best 1.123 OPS while also leading the pitching staff with 30 strikeouts and three wins. Daniel Nisley has been a consistent spark at the plate, hitting .372 with a .518 on-base percentage, while Lucas Lewis (.359 AVG) and Finn Carnevale (.327 AVG, 11 RBI) have added depth throughout the lineup. Wyatt Giesy has provided clutch run production with 20 RBI and eight doubles, and Sam Berntsen has contributed across the board with 20 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. Defensively and on the mound, the team continues to improve each week, gaining valuable experience and confidence heading into the last few games of the season against Westview, Mountainside, and Grant.
⛳ Golf - Men: JV
The JV Men's Golf Team finished up their season at the JV PIL Finale at Heron Lakes on May 7th.
The best weather of the year. The boys were dressed in their team best uniforms and gave it their best effort. There is no real scoring other than what the players give to the coaches. They got to experience real golf over nine holes of regulation summer rules. Some of the highlights in particular was Clark Myers 46 after starting 7, 7 on his first two holes. Wyatt Hanifin closed his round with a regulation par and Chase Walter made an incredible up and down out of the trees from 100 yards and in front of his mother. Here are the scores from the Ida B. Wells crew:
- Clark Myers Jr. 46
- Liam Ketchum Jr. 48
- Wyatt Hanifin Jr. 48
- Shane Kabalican Jr. 49
- Charlie Newbold Fr. 49
- Thomas Hubert Fr. 51
- Chase Walter Fr. 55
Golf - Women: JV ⛳
The JV Girls Golf team showed strong improvement throughout the season. Clara Williams and Amelie Porozni both made big strides and showed a lot of promise on the course. One highlight came at Colwood, where Emaline Mahoney recorded the only birdie of the day by any participant. The future of the program looks bright, as our large group of underclassmen improved in meaningful ways from start to finish.
🥎 Softball: JV 🥎
What a fantastic season it has been for our JV softball team! This group continues to learn and improve with every game—from batting to fielding—and it’s been great to watch their growth.
They’ve truly come together as a team, supporting one another every step of the way. Their base running and confidence in stealing have improved tremendously over the course of the season.
I’m so proud of each and every player for the hard work and effort they’ve put in. It’s hard to believe we only have three weeks left—let’s finish strong!
Go Guardians!
Tennis - Women: JV and JV2 🎾
Practice and Match Play Development
This season, our JV and JV2 tennis teams have demonstrated exceptional commitment to practice. A core focus was placed on developing fundamental skills, including proper grip, footwork, and consistency in groundstrokes. JV players concentrated on refining match strategy, particularly in doubles rotations and working/moving together as a team on the doubles court. JV2 practices have been essential for building foundational tennis knowledge, emphasizing serving mechanics and proper groundstroke techniques.
Our JV teams practices have been co-mingled with the Varsity team and have incorporated drills like ‘queen of the court’ and ‘top gun’ as well as a lot of situational point play—to simulate match pressure and improve court awareness. This approach has fostered significant skill development across the roster and impressive match play results against other schools.
Our JV team had a solid showing at the annual PIL JV tournament at Gabriel park with five teams participating and one of our teams Layla Woods and Emma Robinson winning the silver medal for second place.
The JV2 team has played one match this year at McMinnville. This was a fantastic opportunity to gain some exposure and develop match play confidence. The team successfully navigated their first formal match with enthusiasm and a competitive spirit. JV2 will get another opportunity to compete at Sherwood and Forest Grove to close out the season. Coach Devrie Brennan is doing an amazing job teaching our younger players and developing a talent pipeline to compete for JV roster spots next year.
Overall Progression
I am very pleased with the notable progression of both teams this spring. Many JV2 players are now able to execute controlled rallies and reliable serves, positioning them well for future JV consideration. The JV team players have successfully transitioned from basic rallying to more thoughtful point construction and court coverage. This will serve them well as they round out the season and hopefully continue to practice and compete during the offseason. The commitment to regular attendance at practice and the collective effort at practice has resulted in a deeper bench of well-rounded athletes prepared to continue their growth in the program.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Baseball
Sophomore Henry Rader is the baseball athlete of the week. He helped the JV team go 3-0 on the week, reaching safely 10 times with four hits, four bases-on-balls, and two hit-by-pitches. He scored seven runs and stole eight bases.
Golf - Women
Women's golf is excited to name Lyla Cheah as the Athlete of the Week following her final high school match. Lyla wrapped up her impressive Guardian career with a fantastic showing in our recent 9-hole match at Eastmoreland, demonstrating the technical growth and composure she has developed over the past two seasons.
While her scores have been vital, what we will miss most next year is the energy Lyla brings to the golf team. Her quick wit, sense of humor, and unwavering positivity have made her a natural leader and a favorite among both peers and coaches. Lyla has been a consistent source of encouragement for our younger golfers, showing them how to balance competitive focus with a genuine love for the sport. Thank you for your leadership, Lyla—the green won't be the same without you!
Lacrosse - Men
The Men's lacrosse athlete of the week is senior short stick Henry Elkin. Truthfully, Henry is always in contention for this recognition. He does so much for us in all phases of the game, always giving 100% effort. However to end league play and the regular season, Henry has stepped up even more on the offensive end. He had 4 goals in a close loss to Central Catholic and then went crazy and had 5 goals and 3 assists in our massive upset win vs #9 Hood River Valley. Good job as always Jimmy!
Softball
Sam Stevens is the IBW Athlete of the Week for Softball! Congratulations Sam!
Sam is a constant contender for this accolade; it's hard not to give it to her every week.
However, this week she batted a .5 this week with 2 BB, 4 singles, and a double. She scored every time she got on base! On the mound, Sam Stevens struck out 16 batters. She played outfield and shortstop with a 100% fielding percentage. We had some very close games this week. Sam played a crucial role in rallying her team together and keeping them motivated during tough times. Her work ethic, character, competitiveness, leadership, and love of the game are unparalleled, and we are a better team every day because of Sam Stevens. As a graduating senior, she will be missed greatly.
Tennis - Men
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week is our JV players who played in our scrimmage this past weekend against Catlin Gabel! Rowan Carnevale, Anirudh Tumuluru, Nigel Post, Jacob Nelson, and Ethan Ruby
These players showed up to the scrimmage and played multiple matches while having fun and enjoying themselves during their last matches of the season. Also they have always stepped up to fill positions when asked and never batted an eye, always ready to go and eager to play. Their efforts and relentless pursuit of getting better at tennis is commendable and never overlooked.
Tennis - Women
Women's Tennis Athletes of the week are Ivy Rust and Izzy Vanderwerf who won the Gold Bracket at the Forest Grove JV Tournament on Saturday!! They won their round robin pool and then reeled off 3 straight wins in the knockout bracket to go undefeated on the day. It was amazing to see these young women compete for every single point, be so receptive to coaching and go out and fearlessly apply some of the concepts we have been working so hard on in practice. I am so proud of Ivy and Izzy for representing IBW with class and excellence. They have improved so much this year and I am excited to see what next year holds for both of their tennis careers. Congratulations Ivy and Izzy!!
Volleyball - Men: The Seniors
Thank you to our Seniors who have been the building blocks of the Men's Volleyball program and have been playing since their freshman year.

Spring sports are nearly over but we still need a few volunteers to allow the concessions stands to open! Teams rely on these funds to pay for gear, admissions, training, etc - so keeping them open for as many events as possible is essential!

WEEKLY TID-BITS
“A year from now, you will wish you had started today.”
I. The Life You Keep Postponing
There are parts of your life you keep placing just out of reach because they feel inconvenient, unclear, or not quite ready yet.
So you wait for the right stretch of time, the right version of yourself, or the right set of circumstances that will finally make it all make sense. But life doesn’t rearrange itself for clarity. It responds to movement.
The thing you keep circling might not need more thinking. It might need a first step. What you are waiting for may be created by the act of beginning.

II. The Measure of a Life
A life is not measured by how much you accumulate, but by how much of yourself you actually use: your attention, your care, your effort, and your willingness to show up when it would be easier not to.
There’s a version of you that stays on the surface, doing what is expected, staying within the lines, keeping things manageable.
And there is a version of you that leans in, that risks being seen, that gives more than is required.
The difference between the two is choice.
At some point, you have to decide which version you want to live as.

III. For the Overthinking Mind
You do not usually need full clarity to move forward. Direction often reveals itself through motion.
- There’s a difference between thinking something through and thinking something to death.
- Not every decision carries lifelong consequences. Most can be adjusted, refined, or reversed.
- Action builds confidence in a way that reflection alone cannot.
You can start small and sill be moving in the right direction.

IV. Question
What am I waiting for that I could begin, even in a small way, this week?
V. This Week, I Will
- Start before I feel ready, trusting that readiness can grow from action.
- Say yes to one thing that feels slightly uncomfortable but meaningful.
- Limit the time I spend rethinking decisions that have already been made.
- Create a small pocket of time each day to focus without distraction.
- Follow through on one promise I’ve made to myself.
