A Message from the Principals
by Greg Marino, Williston Central School Principal
On my office wall hangs a favorite quote: “Culture is not something you are, it’s something you do.” (It’s a central theme from Daniel Coyle’s book, The Culture Code.)
The quote (and book) speaks to the true culture of a place being the sum of everything we do - our daily behaviors, habits, and choices. Culture isn't a catchy slogan on a banner; it only exists when backed up by how we treat one another.
We introduce this idea to our new faculty and staff (pictured below) and share it with students during welcome-back assemblies. More importantly, we strive to model it daily. Every small choice contributes to how it feels to walk through our doors: The way we greet one another in the hallways, the words and tone we choose when listening or offering feedback, how we enter a classroom ready to learn, the small ways we show appreciation and show up for others.
These positive behaviors are being taught and practiced during these first seven days at WCS. You can see it everywhere - in our grade-level assemblies, student-designed “Group Agreements”, Classroom and team community-building activities, morning meetings, and advisories. Best of all, we’re seeing the positive effects in our hallways, cafeteria, and classrooms.
The highlight of my week was joining our 7th and 8th graders on their combined field trip to Button Bay State Park yesterday. Designed and planned by our teachers, the trip gave students space to connect, play, and build community in a beautiful setting. Even the weather cooperated. The joy was contagious, and our students demonstrated they truly know what it takes to create a welcoming community for one another.
Our work for the year is just beginning, but thanks to our students and staff, we are off to an incredible start!
