Thoughts from Dr. Pacatte
In a blink of an eye forty years of being an educator is coming to an end. At the end of June, I will be starting that new chapter of life called retirement. It has been a very long time since I didn’t have to “go to work” and even longer since I didn’t have to “go to school.” Frankly, my husband isn’t sure I’m going to like it very much and is asking me to hold onto my suits and heels for a little while longer. I, however, recognize that it is time. We all work so hard and hope that we will be able to retire and simply enjoy life. I am incredibly lucky to be able to have this option. Yet I am doing all of this with very mixed emotions. I am excited, scared, and will cry at the drop of a hat!
Education is a people business. We spend our days surrounded by people, helping them, problem solving, sharing, listening, and laughing. I will miss all of that. Working with my colleagues has been so rewarding, and I leave knowing that the leadership team is strong and the district is in great hands. The Board of Education has continually supported me as well as our work. The teachers amaze me on a daily basis. And the people who make this district work- maintenance, custodians, secretaries, instructional aides, bus drivers, and lunchroom workers - are beyond kind and helpful.
Over my forty years in education, schools have changed. We try to fill a growing list of needs and work with children in a world so very different from the one in which I grew up. Kids need a place to go where they can learn, create, and laugh. There is always a special feel to schools: a subtle buzz of activity and when I walk through the doors, I always feel at home. I hope that for our students too.
The teachers, staff, parents, and kids of our district have created a place where being here filled me up. It pushed me to keep learning and strive to be the best I could be. It has been a privilege to spend 23 years in D56.
Thank you all.
