Featured Story: 15,000 Eggs, 77 Shorians, and One Hopping Community Tradition!
Service in Action
In partnership with the Saint Clair Shores Fire Department, Lake Shore Public Schools' National Honor Society from Lake Shore High School and National Junior Honor Society from Kennedy Middle School filled eggs in preparation for the annual Easter Egg Hunt held on Saturday, April 4th at Blossom Heath Park. The event begins at noon.
Fire Lt. Scott Campbell reached out to Lake Shore for assistance in filling these eggs and 77 Shorians (33 from LSHS, 44 from KMS) were eager to help. Campbell brought with him Firefighter Travis Sparling to assist.
Some of our middle school students recently helped bring a little extra magic to an Easter egg hunt by filling special Golden Eggs with surprises beyond just candy.
- Haylee Livings added $4.
- Hannah Livings added $1.
- Addi Probert added spare change.
- Aubrey Regnerus added $20.
Many shared memories of how special it felt to discover a golden egg when they were younger—one student even remembered finding several and being so happy they started crying (happy tears!) at just 6 years old!
With help from students like LSHS Seniors D'Varon Galloway and Tyler Pettway, these eggs will bring that same excitement to younger children while earning service hours and spreading joy in the community.
Children of all ages can bring their baskets to fill with eggs while parents cheer them on. Then, visit our special guest, the Easter Bunny, for a great family picture!
This fun-filled event is sponsored by the SCS Firefighters Union, Local 1744, in cooperation with the city Parks & Recreation Department. You won’t want to miss this hopping event!
Thank you, Shorian Nation, for packing 15,000 eggs with delicious treats for the anticipated 450 expert egg collectors to enjoy! We also appreciate the Fire Department's pizza delivery today for all student-helpers.

Campbell wrote, “The enthusiasm and effort of your student scholars is exceptional, and is a direct byproduct of the leadership example set for them by their coordinators. Finding a group of students that are not only willing, but enjoy, serving the community is a unicorn of rarity. I am grateful to you for setting our event up for success and bringing out the very best in public outreach programs for this union. Shorian pride is to be commended and we at SCSFD are so very proud to have such exceptional partners in service."
Featured Photo: Our Beatles
Our Maintenance & Operations team had some fun putting their own spin on the iconic Abbey Road pose by The Beatles.
No zebra crossing? No problem. We’ve got hallways, parking lots, and a whole lot of talent.
Legend has it this photo was originally taken outside Abbey Road Studios in London… but we think this Saint Clair Shores version might be even more iconic.
Keeping things running smoothly—one perfectly timed step (and maybe a wrench) at a time.

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.
People with the character strength of open-mindedness like to consider new ideas and try new things. They examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.
Meredith Green is officially an Eagle Scout and a force of nature.
A School-of-Choice student who transferred to Lake Shore in the middle of 6th grade, two weeks before COVID, Meredith says joining was the best decision she ever made. She appreciates Lake Shore’s balance: it pushes her academically without overwhelming her. At Lake Shore High School, she competes in track, is a member of NHS, participates in the early college program (with 60 credits already transferred), and volunteers regularly.
Outdoorsy, open-minded, and community-minded, Meredith is proud of her Eagle Scout status. For her Eagle project she organized a fundraising drive to support Sanctum House, a women’s shelter. Looking ahead, she plans to pursue criminal justice and work to help victims of human trafficking — a perfect fit for someone with her determination and heart.
We’re proud to share that Lake Shore High School NHS members rallied behind the effort, showing their commitment to service and supporting an important cause. Together, they made a meaningful impact!
As the top popcorn seller in the nation in 2018 — raising $36,000 — she demonstrated remarkable salesmanship and people skills. Her biggest haul came from 2018 tailgating events, and she celebrated with a portion of those raised funds camping at the National Jamboree in West Virginia (complete with close encounters of the bear kind). When discouraged, Meredith leans on grit: her mother Sara sums her up in one word — “tenacious.”
March is Women's History Month, a month to study, observe, and celebrate the vital role women play in American life and history. We will continue to encourage girls and young women to speak up, challenge expectations, and become trailblazers, pioneers, innovators, and leaders like Meredith. And that includes encouraging them to advocate for their own mental health.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate HUMOR and WELLNESS which will take place during the weeks of April 6-10 and April 13-17.

OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Leadership, Legacy & Little Learners: Celebrating Lisa Bonett and Women Who Inspire
Big congratulations to Lisa Bonett on her recent appointment as Director of the Early Childhood Center for Lake Shore Public Schools! She’s teaming up with ECC Coordinator Kelly Biondo to lead the launch of an 18-classroom, world-class early childhood center opening later this year. Exciting times ahead for our youngest learners!
What do you enjoy most about working at LSPS?
I am excited to serve as the new Director of Early Childhood Education at Lake Shore Public Schools. I am honored to take on this role and to partner with educators, families, and the community to create strong, supportive learning environments for our youngest learners.
Lake Shore is my home away from home, and I am very proud to be a Shorian. I have been with the district since 2002, and what I enjoy most about working here is the sense of community and collaboration. Being part of a team dedicated to supporting students and families makes every day rewarding.
I have had the privilege of serving in a wide variety of roles at Lake Shore since 2002, including teaching Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 5th Grade, Resource Room, and secondary courses in English, Biology, and Chemistry. I have also worked as a Literacy Specialist, Teacher Consultant, MTSS Coordinator, and MISD Self-Contained Teacher for students with severe emotional impairments. This diverse career has given me a deep understanding of how students learn at every stage and the importance of vertical alignment from PreK through 12th grade, allowing me to support both educators and students in creating a seamless, successful educational journey.
What do you do in your free time?
I am married to my college sweetheart, and we have four wonderful children: a daughter who is a Labor & Delivery Nurse, a son who is a local firefighter and also serves in the Army National Guard, a 10th-grade son, and an 8th-grade daughter. We enjoy spending time together, whether it’s exploring outdoors, cooking together, or supporting each other’s activities and interests. Most weekends are spent at wrestling meets and cheer competitions, cheering on our kids. I also enjoy staying busy, gardening, cooking, reading, and being outdoors.
What is one thing you wish people knew about the work you do?
I want everyone to know how dedicated, innovative, and loving our ECC staff are. Every day, they bring laughter, energy, and expertise to provide high-quality child care and exceptional early childhood programs, including our Pre-K for All. Our programs focus on early literacy and math essentials from birth and emphasize play-based learning, fostering an early love of learning while building critical skills that grow with children through age 18. I often think, I wish the ECC had been here when my children were little! I also want people to know how much thought, planning, and collaboration goes into supporting both students and staff. In my new role, I am most excited to support our team in creating hands-on, creative learning experiences in our state-of-the-art ECC facility while collaborating with the broader community to ensure every child has access to high-quality early learning experiences. My goal is to help prepare our youngest learners for a successful educational journey while partnering with families and supporting teachers every step of the way.
What are you looking forward to the most in your new role and/or at the ECC?
I am most looking forward to continuing to build strong relationships with our staff, students, families, and communities while partnering with Kelly Biondo. I am passionate about instilling a love for learning in our youngest learners and creating an environment where children feel supported, inspired, and excited to explore the world around them.

🎭 Rodgers Drama Club Brings the Jungle to Life! 🐾✨
We appreciate all of the hard work of our stage junkies!
Thank you to Rodgers Elementary's Drama Club for their entertaining performances of The Jungle Book Kids.
The Jungle Book Kids is a fun, high-energy musical based on the classic story by Rudyard Kipling. The show follows young Mowgli as he grows up in the jungle and learns important lessons about friendship, bravery, and belonging. Along the way, he meets unforgettable characters like Baloo the carefree bear, Bagheera the wise panther, and the mischievous monkeys—while trying to outsmart the fearsome tiger, Shere Khan.
Packed with catchy songs, colorful costumes, and playful jungle adventures, this kid-friendly production is perfect for all ages. It’s a joyful showcase of student talent that celebrates teamwork, confidence, and creativity on stage.
Mrs. Snarski, Mrs. Kiefer, and Mrs. Adkins serve as Co-Director and Co-Producer. They also have many incredible parents and staff who pitch in to help! They truly have an amazing team that puts on the show!
A special thank you to LSHS Stage Crew members Kara Lawfield, Ashley Geib, Meghan Creson, and Jessykah Cavanaugh for running the lights, sound, moving props, and stage crafting.
Guest Author Visit = Big Smiles & Bigger Imaginations!
Our K–2 students were thrilled to welcome guest author Leslie Helakoski for a fun, interactive visit that celebrated creativity, curiosity, and open minds.
Leslie is the author of 15 picture books—and sometimes the illustrator too! Her award-winning stories are known for their humor, wordplay, and heart, including favorites like Ready or Not, Woolbur Goes to School, and Hoot & Honk Just Can’t Sleep, with more exciting titles on the way.
During her visit, Leslie shared her writing process, how books are developed from idea to publication, and brought stories to life with finger plays and songs—keeping students engaged and inspired every step of the way.
First graders in Ms. Post’s class had a great time and shared some sweet reflections from their experience:
🗣️ Esmae: “When she read Gator’s Big Mouth, it was fun!”
🎨 Benjamin: “My favorite part was when we drew an alligator.”
📚 Garret: “The drawings we got to do and listening to her read the stories was great.”
Moments like these spark creativity, imagination, and a love of learning! 🐊✨
A longtime champion of literacy, Leslie reminded our students that writing starts with imagination, curiosity, and an open mind. She shared how working with children continues to inspire her—proof that stories connect us all.
Thank you, Leslie Helakoski, for inspiring our youngest readers and writers!
Innovation
Striving for Safer Driving at Lake Shore High School
We applaud Lake Shore High School’s Marketing & Sales and Marketing Manager classes for their participation in the Strive for a Safer Drive (#S4SD) campaign.
Students across Michigan — including those at Lake Shore — are gaining important skills to become safer drivers through this impactful public-private partnership between Ford Driving Skills for Life and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP).
Led by business teacher Mrs. Radlick, this peer-led traffic safety campaign focuses on reducing traffic crashes, which remain a leading cause of death among teens. The program helps students better understand the risks associated with inexperience and risky driving behaviors, while promoting smart, responsible choices behind the wheel. This year's campaign topic is vulnerable road users such as passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians.
As part of the S4SD program, Lake Shore’s Marketing & Sales students created a teen-led campaign to educate peers on topics including distracted driving, seat belt safety, speeding, impaired driving, and winter driving safety. For example, students also took the lead in administering a seatbelt usage survey, collecting real-world data on safety habits in our community.
Through this initiative, the class successfully secured a $1,000 S4SD grant to support their campaign. Their primary focus this year is distracted driving, with the powerful message: #LookTwiceSaveaLife.
Activities include visits from Michigan State Troopers Dillon and Hallett who brought driving simulators to help students safely experience the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. Students participated in safe driving awareness activities and a safe driving pledge as part of the campaign, which continues through March.
Lake Shore has a strong history in this program — earning 3rd place in 2019 and 4th place in 2022 — and is working toward another top finish this year.
Driving is an exciting privilege, and this student-led safety initiative is making a real difference.
For more information about Strive for a Safer Drive, visit Michigan.gov/S4SD.
Bonus: Our Career & Technical Education programs were featured recently in the Macomb Daily — with articles written by our very own Lake Shore journalism students! One of the highlights included a spotlight on Mrs. Radlick’s classes titled “Lake Shore Means Business.” Great work by our student writers and our CTE programs that continue to prepare Shorians for the future.
Celebration
March is Music In Our Schools Month!
The KMS 7th Grade Concert Band earned a Division II – Excellent Rating, and the KMS 8th Grade Wind Ensemble earned a Division I – Superior Rating at the MSBOA District XVI Band & Orchestra Festival held at Warren Woods Tower High School!
Even more exciting — the 8th Grade Wind Ensemble has qualified for the MSBOA State Festival in April!
Mr. Malabed and Mr. Alter are incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and talent these students showed on stage. Way to represent KMS!
How cool is this?!
Before taking in The Sound of Music, our amazing Rocketeers performed on the iconic grand staircase at the Fox Theatre under the direction of Rodgers Elementary Music teacher Mrs. Toma! What an unforgettable moment — singing in one of Detroit’s most beautiful and historic venues before enjoying the magic of The Sound of Music.
Talk about a perfect harmony of talent and inspiration!
Things are getting slightly squeaky in Ms. Wischmeyer and Mrs. Rueger-West’s music rooms at Masonic Heights Elementary and Violet Elementary as these talented students practice hitting high & low notes on their recorders.
The LSHS Bands performed at the MSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival at Clawson High School, impressing a tough adjudication panel with their talent and dedication. The Symphonic Band earned straight 2nd Division Excellent Ratings, receiving valuable feedback to build on. The Wind Ensemble also earned a high 2nd Division Excellent Rating for their advanced repertoire and achieved straight A’s with a 1st Division in Sight-Reading. 👏🎵
The LSHS Jazz Band, for the first time since 2019, earned straight 1st Division Superior Ratings at MSBOA State Jazz Festival, hosted by Wyandotte Roosevelt High School!
For the third year in a row, the Kennedy Middle School Jazz Ensemble earned STRAIGHT 1st Division Superior Ratings at MSBOA State Jazz Festival at Fraser High School!
Big Smiles. Bigger Imaginations. One Incredible Literacy Leader!
📚✨ Book = Big Smiles + Bigger Imaginations!
Congratulations, to Mrs. Bishoping, 5th grade teacher at Rodgers Elementary, for being chosen to be our 2025-2026 Macomb Reads Literacy Ambassador! It is an honor to have her join the Macomb County Literacy Ambassadors Team!
The ideal Literacy Ambassador is:
- Passionate: Literacy Ambassadors believe in the importance of reading and share their excitement with the school community.
- Leads by Example: Literacy Ambassadors actively engage in reading for pleasure and serve as role models for our youth.
- Determined: Literacy Ambassadors work to ensure that Macomb County youth have the tools needed to acquire literacy skills to reach their full potential.
Research shows that students who read daily — and are read to by teachers — score the highest in reading across the globe, no matter their income level. Reading really is powerful! 🌍📖
We're so also grateful to our amazing community partner, St. Clair Shores Public Library, for helping our Shorian readers aim higher! 🙌

✨ Books are uniquely portable magic.
Let’s keep the magic going, Shorian Nation!
Happy Pi (3.14) Day!
Why should you never talk to pi? Because he’ll just go on forever.
Happy Pi (3.14) Day! Shorians celebrated this infinite decimal in many ways, but we revisited this dynamic cookie lesson.
Mrs. Barnett and Mrs. Warren’s 6th graders at Kennedy Middle School completed a Pi Day Measuring Cookies activity. To begin, they measured their nilla, sugar, chocolate chip, monster, oatmeal, Oreos, and vanilla sandwich cookies using the centimeter side of their ruler, measuring to the nearest millimeter. Then, students measured the circumstance and diameter of the cookies, recording their measurements as a ratio on their Cookie Monster worksheets!
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) because the date represents the first three digits of the mathematical constant pi (π), 3.14. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, and it's an irrational number, meaning it has infinite decimal places without repeating.
🥧 Happy Pi Day Birthday to Ainsley Cesarz! Born on 3/14, Ainsley always gets a little extra math magic on her special day. Her whole class helped celebrate with cookies and Pi Day fun. Even cooler — she shares her birthday with legendary scientist Albert Einstein!
What's your favorite kind of pi(e) — apple, cherry, or the infinite kind?

Community Voices Bring Stories to Life During March is Reading Month!
Read alouds promotes listening skills and encourages imagination.
Thank you to all of our amazing guest readers—from LSPS Central Office administrators to moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, and student-athletes—for sharing your time and love of reading with our students.
The 3-5 grade students had a with a visit from Senator Hertel at Rodgers Elementary! He read One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote, a fun nonfiction from Dr. Seuss, to the Rocket classes and took a few moments to explain his role in a relatable way.
LSHS Class of 2018 Tom Kettler assisted Senator Hertel at this event. He currently works as a District Aid as part of State Senate District 12. His mom Linda Kettler is employed as a Remedial Specialist at Violet Elementary. Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian.
Math + Reading = The Perfect Equation!
Deb Wilson, Lake Shore’s Elementary Math Coach, recently visited our classrooms as a Math Mystery Reader in celebration of March is Reading Month! Students loved the surprise guest and the chance to see how math and literacy come together through storytelling.
A special thank you to the Lake Shore Foundation for their generous grant, which allowed us to purchase a wonderful set of math literacy books for all three elementary libraries. These books help support our new math program, Everyday Math, while showing students that math can be discovered in stories, creativity, and everyday life.
North Lake students in Mrs. Bruce's ELA classes celebrated their new classroom library with various activities throughout the month. A big thank you goes out to the Lake Shore Foundation for the grant that allowed the books to be purchased.
North Lake ELA students made several visits to the ECC as guest readers. Everyone enjoyed the experience!
We are so grateful for this partnership that helps make learning engaging and meaningful for our students!
When the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) compared the reading skills of 210,000 students from thirty-two different countries, it found the highest scores (regardless of income level) among children who were read to by their teachers (and guests) daily and who read the most pages for pleasure daily.
Your voices, stories, and enthusiasm helped make March is Reading Month extra special and reminded our students that reading is something our whole community values. We are so grateful for each of you!
