Universal Screener Universal Screener

Universal Screening--aimswebPlus & Youth Needs Screener

In November 2010, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction partnered with education stakeholders from around the state to implement Multi-Level Systems of Supports designed to increase success for every learner. The Stevens Point Area Public School District administers the aimswebPlus assessment as an academic universal screening tool. All students, grades K-10, will be completing this screener in the areas of reading and math during the month of September as well as in the winter and spring months.

In addition, students will participate in the Youth Needs Screener, which is a 16 item rating scale that students complete regarding their needs and strengths. The Character Strong screener is grounded in a conceptual model which states that school success is predicated not just upon academic achievement, but also success within multiple inter-related behavioral domains. All students, grades 7-12, will be completing this screener in the fall.

These screeners have always been critical in helping us prepare students for success both academically and emotionally. Parents may choose to opt out of the Youth Needs Screener. To do so, parents should contact your child/children’s building principal.

Mathematics Academic Support Options Mathematics Academic Support Options

The PJ Jacobs Math Department offers several support options to help you succeed. Here are the available resources and how they can best help you:

Targeted Support🎯

Targeted Support is a great resource for getting direct help from your own math teacher. Based on classroom data, this time is used for reteaching content that students need help with. This session is in the math classrooms on Wednesdays during Learning Center. Your math teacher will write you a pass to come up and receive some extra help.

Before School Math Help Center 🌞

On Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:10-7:36 we will be offering math help in room 314. A math teacher is available to assist students with any math class. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, get help for homework and prepare for tests and quizzes. Please just come up to room 314 on Wednesday or Friday mornings and we’ll be glad to help!

Math Help Center during Learning Center 📝

On Tuesdays and Thursdays during Learning Center, a math teacher is available in room 311 ready to assist students with any math class. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, get caught up after an absence, and prepare for tests or quizzes. Just ask your Learning Center teacher to write you a pass for Math Help Center. There are a limited number of spots available so be sure to get the pass either from your learning center teacher or your regular math teacher.

UWSP Tutoring 🟡🟣🟡

For more focused, one-on-one support, you can take advantage of the tutoring services offered through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. This free resource is open to all students in grades 7-12 and is staffed by UWSP students. Tutoring is available at the UWSP Library and Student Resource Center Room 150 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

For more details on any of these options, feel free to talk with your math teacher!

Updates from the Nurse Updates from the Nurse

With the change to students only being allowed to have lidded WATER bottles in the halls and classrooms now (see page 21 of student handbook). We may also see an increase in symptoms of caffeine withdrawal. For the students this may be hard for them to handle as symptoms can last up to a week or longer. Please review the signs and symptoms of caffeine withdrawal and how we can help them.
