Dryden High School's Class of 2021 celebrated College Signing Day on Monday, May 3.

College Signing Day is a national celebration of all high school seniors and transfer students, especially those from low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation college-going backgrounds who have committed to pursuing higher education — whether at a community college, a four-year college or university, or a professional training program, or by joining the military.

Students completed four stations:

1. Intention: students decorated the Commons Area windows with their higher education commitment

2. Photos: an opportunity for group pictures

3. Gratitude: students wrote thank you notes to those who helped them reach their goals

4. Advice: students signed a banner giving advice to underclassmen

Dryden High School received a grant from the Michigan College Access Network which covered needed supplies and some gifts to be given away at the event. Gifts were also purchased from our Amazon Wish List by Michele, The Cronkright Family, Ray & Lori Hall, Kim & Eric Fleming, The Biggs Family, Katz Rhodes, The Maris Family, The Logan Family, The Abromaitis Family, The Spencer Family, The Finnigan Family, The Voss Family, The Pease Family, Mr. & Mrs. Campbell, The Carroll Family, The Pagano-Lovett Family, and Beth Highley.

Thank you to all who contributed to this special event, and good luck to the seniors who have committed to furthering their education beyond high school!

Varsity Softball

by Miya Wolff

Last week was a very rainy one for the Dryden Varsity Softball team. The girls started the week by traveling to CPS on Monday, playing through the weather, and coming home with two victories. The scores for the games were 20-8 and 16-0.

The Lady Cardinals then took on Deckerville at home on Thursday. Once again it rained off and on, and the girls played two very tough games, battling through the elements. The first game ended in a 14-7 loss for Dryden, but the girls came back with energy in the second game. After going back and forth with the Lady Eagles, the Cardinals entered the 7th inning down 13-11, determined to catch up. During a great inning of batting, senior Riley Knox stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam to put Dryden in the lead! The girls ended the game with a final score of 18-13, a Dryden victory.

This week the Cardinals hope to keep their momentum, starting with a game at Almont on Monday. Then, the Varsity Softball team will host Brown City on Wednesday before ending their week with a trip to Kingston on Thursday. Great job last week, ladies, and good luck!

Varsity Baseball

by Miya Wolff

The weather was not a friend of our Varsity Baseball team last week, as both games were played at least partially in the rain. Despite the wet conditions, the Cardinals toughed it out, first at CPS on Monday where they won their first game 16-2. Unfortunately, their second game was cut short due to rain. Stats for the game include Josh Schornak, Reed Hall, and Charlie Fliedner with three hits each, Dylan Ledford with two hits, and Marty Barker, Joe Breeding, and Michael Hickmott with one hit each. Ledford helped seal the win for Dryden, pitching four innings and striking out 10 CPS batters.

On Thursday, the boys took on Deckerville at home in a slightly drier double-header. Their first game ended in a 14-8 loss. Marty Barker had two hits with one RBI, and Charlie Fliedner added two hits as well as three RBI. Reed Hall and Dylan Ledford had one hit each, and Michael Hickmott had one hit with two RBI. Mason Stofcheck helped the team with an RBI of his own, too.

The second of the two games was much closer, ending in a 9-9 tie. Highlights from this game are as follows:

Marty Barker - 3 hits, 1 double

Reed Hall, Mason Stofcheck, Charlie Fliedner - 2 hits each

Dylan Ledford - 2 hits, 1 double

Josh Schornak, Michael Hickmott - 1 hit each.

The Dryden Cardinals are scheduled to take on Bay City All Saints at home on Monday and then head to Kingston on Thursday. Good luck, boys!

Sean Finnigan is an eighth-grader who has been at Dryden for seven years. Sean is involved in Cross Country, Track, and NJHS. Sean’s favorite thing about Dryden is he gets to take advanced classes. Outside of school, Sean enjoys hanging out with his family, friends, and cousins as well as playing video games. Sean does not have a career in mind yet, but he would like to own his own business someday. Sean is looking forward to taking college classes and new high school classes once he gets to high school. He says the hardest thing about COVID is it being hard to work from home.
