Academics
Reading & Language Arts
We are beginning a new unit in our HMH Into Reading program titled Food for Thought. Our essential question is: What can we do to make more helpful food choices? In this module, students will explore informational and argumentative texts, learning to identify text and graphic features, determine author’s purpose, and recognize how ideas are supported to better understand new and unfamiliar topics.
Students will also read realistic fiction and recipes to build knowledge across different genres while strengthening their vocabulary and ability to synthesize information. Through these texts, students will discover how making healthful and sustainable food choices benefits both our bodies and our world.
As we approach the end of the year, students will also participate in teacher-selected projects that may include cross-curricular connections. These activities can incorporate reading, writing, science, and social studies skills, allowing students to apply their learning in creative and meaningful ways while reinforcing key concepts from throughout the year.
Math
Science
In Science, we will complete Chapter 10, in which students identify and describe past environments based on fossil evidence, including common Texas fossils. We will complete the school year by participating in STEM connections. Students will apply the Engineering Design process and will complete their design through Project Based Learning. Students will work in teams to solve real-world engineering challenges. Together, they will design and create a customized sundial that accurately measures time and represents the spirit and identity of Rees.
