October Lifeline: Teamwork
"I am a helpful and contributing group and team member, and feel responsible for helping the team reach its goals."
Fall Break - No School October 13-17, 2025
(Return to school on Monday, Oct 20)
What is Teamwork?
Teamwork means helping and caring for others so the whole group can succeed—whether that’s your class, your family, a sports team, or your friends. When you show teamwork, you do your part, try your best, and look out for the people around you. Good teammates are reliable, kind, and willing to work together to make things better for everyone.
Family Discussion:
Talk together about ways you can show teamwork in your everyday life.
Questions to Try:
What does being a good teammate look like at school?
How can we show teamwork in our family?
Why do you think teamwork makes things easier or more fun?
Dear Boone Meadow Families -
It’s hard to believe we’re already a quarter of the way through the school year! Time truly flies when we’re learning, growing, and connecting together. It’s been a strong and joyful start, and we’re excited for the many experiences and successes still ahead.
Next week marks Fall Break, and we hope you and your family are able to rest, recharge, and make wonderful memories together during this time away from school. Please note that the school building will be closed throughout the week, with staff and students returning on Monday, October 20th. We hope you are able to use this pause to enjoy family, friends, and maybe even some fall adventures!
A few other items to note:
- Family Conferences - Looking ahead, Family Conferences are scheduled for November 5–6. These meetings are a valuable opportunity to celebrate your child’s growth and strengthen the partnership between home and school. As a reminder, November 6th will be an e-Day for all elementary students. If you haven’t yet received sign-up information from your child’s teacher, you can expect it soon.
- Veterans Day Program - Our students are beginning preparations for our Veterans Day Program, which will take place on Monday, November 10th from 9:30–10:15 AM. This special event honors those who have served in our nation’s armed forces. We are pleased to welcome veteran guests (and their guests) as well as parents/guardians of our 4th grade students. Due to space limitations, we are unable to accommodate extended family members or parents of students in other grade levels. We appreciate your understanding and support as we create a meaningful experience for our honored guests.
- Student Directory (Directory Spot) -BME PTO is providing an opt-in student directory to help families connect with one another. Ever hear your child mention a new friend and want to reach out for a playdate or birthday invitation? The directory can make that easier! Please note that ZCS staff are unable to share private student contact information with anyone not listed in PowerSchool, so the PTO directory is a great resource for family-to-family connections. See the information below to learn more and find out how to opt in.
- Jog-A-Thon Update - I’m thrilled to share that we met—and even surpassed—our school-wide Jog-A-Thon goal of $25,000, with a total of approximately $25,200! These funds will go directly toward supporting our students, classrooms, and exciting program enhancements here at Boone Meadow. A huge thank you to our amazing families for your incredible generosity and encouragement, and a special shout-out to our PTO for their unwavering dedication and hard work in making this event a success.
As we head into Fall Break, we want to thank you for your continued partnership and encouragement. Boone Meadow is such a special place because of the caring and connected community we share. Enjoy this well-deserved time of rest, play, and family connection—we’ll look forward to seeing everyone back soon!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Tom & Jarrod
Tom Hundley, Principal
Jarrod Gatlin, Assistant Principal

ILEARN Checkpoints
Starting this school year, IDOE requires all schools to administer ILEARN Checkpoints three times a year for students in grade 3-8. Each checkpoint assesses standards in English Language Arts and Math. These checkpoints are only formative. This means that they are giving teachers information to help inform their instruction to best meet the needs of each student. ZCS is giving the checkpoints after fall break (checkpoint #1: October 20 – 31), after winter break (checkpoint #2: January 6-16), and before spring break (checkpoint #3: March 16-26). The final summative ILEARN assessment is given in April.
ZCS uses state-approved, research-based literacy and math curriculum that has a set scope and sequence in which standards are taught. This means that each ILEARN checkpoint may assess some standards that have not directly/explicitly been taught yet. If this is the case, teachers will use the checkpoint as a pre-assessment to find out what students may already know before direct instruction occurs. To find out more information about ILEARN checkpoints, please click here for our ZCS FAQ.

Visitors and Volunteers
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to check in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer's first volunteer experience, the individual must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check.. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days before the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state-mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee for the full background check which will expire after 5 years.
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government-issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
