Principal's Message Principal's Message

Hello, Families,

What a week! Mother Nature near and far has made the last few days some we won't soon forget. Thank you to our families and staff for their flexibility as we navigated adjusted schedules this week. We did it and can't wait for a (hopefully) *normal* week ahead!

Reminder - The PTA Movie Night is postponed and new information will be coming soon.

Please keep an eye out for Parent-Teacher Conference sign-ups coming home from teachers. Conference nights are February 26th and March 5th. We'd love to have 100% family attendance!

This Week's Question Around the Dinner Table:

  • What is one of your favorite indoor recess activities?

Enjoy each other this weekend! ⛄

As we came back to school after winter break, all students revisited expectations of making sure to bring back their books when they come to the media center and to continue to make sure they take care of both their books and classroom space. We revisited what it means to be a reader and how a good media center user tries different books, checks out their favorites to enjoy again, tries and book and its okay to not finish a book if they don’t like it, and to explore new things through books to help them learn more about the world and what they enjoy as developing readers. Students learned that we have been holding strong at being 3rd place in check outs for the elementary school, we are only checking out 200 books less that Lincoln Elementary which is a larger school. This is such an impressive accomplishment for our building!

To build off of talking about reading resolutions, students in grades 3-5 talked about healthy tech habits as they worked to make a new years tech resolution. First we talked about how apps are designed to draw in people through different design tools such as notification alerts, endless scrolling, autoplaying videos, and engagement. Students had the chance to discuss how they might use apps outside of school, or which one they might be drawn in by if they used different apps. Students got to discuss ways to stop being drawn in by apps and brought up ideas such as taking breaks to do something else, having a timer to make sure to limit their time, play a game with friends inside in cold weather or outside in the summer, play with a pet, or read a book. 3rd through 5th graders also worked on understanding news and how it is presented. They looked closer in depth at understanding how people are in charge of presenting information in different ways based on the needs of different media outlets. Students talked about how a news report will present different perspectives than a science report or a travel report.

In grades K-2 students started talking about having a media balance and understanding how we can enjoy media but can also enjoy other things outside of media too such as taking walks, playing with toys with friends, and more. Students also looked at advertising and understanding how it markets to people through feelings and emotions. We continued to talk about what information we don’t share online and how to protect ourselves when using digital resources. Kindergarteners focused on being safe with devices and understanding how to treat them and looked at why people have passwords to keep their accounts safe. 1st and 2nd graders talked about how to keep our usernames and passwords safe and that we make sure to log off of shared devices to keep our accounts safe. K-2 students also were introduced to the Biography and Poetry section of the media center to check out new books to learn about people and enjoy poems

I am really excited to dive into research and discovery in February. Students will be researching different sports, countries, athletes, and more in relation to the Winter Olympics. Students will be able to use this time to learn more about the world around them and to understand how to find information from vetted and quality resources. I can’t wait to have the students find something they are interested in and own it to make something to share what they have learned. Students will also have a reading Olympics challenge sheet with different challenges for them to try and earn an Olympic reading Gold medal! You’ll see more of this in the next Media recap.

Also be on the look out for overdue book notices. I will send them home for students to check that the book isn’t at home and if they can’t find it we will check the shelves. If we still can’t find it there is time to still keep looking

Question you can ask

1- What media related goal did you set for yourself this year? What book related goal did you set for this year?

2- Ask your student what are ways they can be safe online? Ask they what is something you could do to keep your own account safe.

3- How can you keep an electronic device safe?
