The SMS Press

Principal's Update
Parent Teacher Conferences wrapped up Tuesday 10-3-23! Thank you to all the parents/guardians that signed up and met with teachers. We had a great turnout and that is very much appreciated. Partnering with families during their student's education leads to positive outcomes! Thanks for partnering with us at Superior Middle School.
This past week students and staff practiced a fire drill and did some great learning around school safety. During Spartan Start classes last week, students reviewed the Speak Up and Speak Out app and learned how to use it and what to use it for. Monday, we held a school safety drill where we reviewed our school safety protocols including the ALICE Protocol. Students were engaged and participated very well in the lessons and understand that we all can help keep our school safe!
Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

All staff hand out Spartan Tickets to students who are showing Work, Respect, Belong at SMS. They have the opportunity to "spend" their Spartan Tickets at a store that is now open. If you would like to help promote positive behavior at SMS, we have created an Amazon Wish List here. Any donations are appreciated.
Treating our Teachers
Thank you to SCCU for providing dinner for teachers on 9/28, and for Holden Insurance for providing dinner on 10/3. Thirsty Pagan gave us a great deal! Our teachers love feeling the support from our community.
Thank you to all of those who sent in treats for our SWEET STAFF! The sugar boost really helped them get through their long evenings.
Counselors Corner
Counselors are here to support all our students.
Please reach out to:

Maryann Bonneville - 8th Grade
This week during Spart Start, our students are participating in discussion around what it means to be a Superhero. We are all responsible for creating a safe, respectful and inclusive environment here at SMS. By using our superhero powers we can create a healthy and supportive school culture and build a commUNITY.
What is Unity Day?
“An event created by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, to come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support. WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to color our nation, and even the world, to visibly show that our society believes no child should ever experience bullying.” (PACER.org)

SMS has built an exciting intramural program this year.
All registration for SMS Intramural sports and clubs is done online using EduTrak. Please go to this site and create an account. Then “shop” for the activity of your choice and add to your basket. Food Service
Breakfast and dinner at SMS continue to be free for all students, but lunch is paid. We encourage all families to apply for free and reduced lunch. Even if you are not eligible, your application helps our school. You can apply multiple times throughout the school year, especially if your home situation changes. You can easily add funds into your student's lunch account through My School Bucks.
Attendance Matters!
Contact Ms. Charity at charity.gurovitsch@superior.k12.wi.us with any questions or assistance with attendance needs. Here are some reminders.
PowerSchool
Communication about attendance and grades is a top priority each year at the secondary school level. To help facilitate communication, SMS uses an online grade book called PowerSchool that will continue with your child through high school. A PowerSchool parent account will allow you to check your student's progress in school including grades, lunch balance, as well as their attendance. If you need assistance with setting up your Parent Portal in PowerSchool, or need to reset your password, send Ms. Charity an email and she can assist you.
You made it all the way to the bottom! Thanks for sticking with me. As a reward, I will let you know that a little birdy told me there could be a Fall dance coming. Date and details TBD, but I will be sure to let you know as soon as I find out!
