Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books is a statewide reading challenge designed to promote a love of reading among our students . Students read and study a list of 20 books to prepare for a statewide, online “battle” to find the teams who know the books the best. The SMS Battle of the Books team started formally meeting and practicing last week. Our students will be busy reading and studying the 2024-25 Reading List to prepare for the state battle in February.
SMS Library Gives Thanks for Books and Readers

Counselor Corner
November is underway, gratitude month for staff and students at SMS. There have
been so many positive classroom activities which have facilitated reflection around
gratitude. Being grateful for our mistakes, the learning we can gain from them and the
opportunity they provide to demonstrate grit. Having a growth mindset means we
recognize humans can learn from mistakes and by practicing skills for emotion
management, decision making, problem solving, and goal setting will help us deal with
life challenges more effectively. Growth mindset skills help people to demonstrate grit
by focusing on what we can control and what to try next, instead of giving up.
Facilitating thinking around the internal and external factors along with possible
outcomes, helps with our decision-making process. Reflection about consequences,
encouragement, benefits of learning, strengths and improvements leads students
towards more positive experiences. Practicing gratitude by reflecting upon the people
who have inspired us to keep trying, maintain positivity, respect and staying truthful to
what we believe helps with pursuing happiness. Inspirational people teach us to pay
attention to those characteristics we admire about them and reflect on why they are
important. Recognizing qualities like strength and wisdom enhance resiliency, we can
be grateful for those leaders who inspire kindness and respect from us all.
