flourishes across Alberta and further afield.

The abundance of shared wisdom underscored the vital role of Catholic education in the tapestry of Western Canada's culture. Fostering unity, cooperation, and clear communication, Catholic education is poised to prosper, safeguarding its valued legacy and securing its enduring influence.

Catholic Education is Evangelization:

Catholic schools play a crucial role in the Church's mission of evangelization, extending the reach of the Gospel globally. They hold special importance as centers of evangelization for youth. Historically, Catholic education has shaped students in their Christian journey and their ultimate salvation, involving them actively in the sacraments, and deepening their understanding of the Catholic faith's knowledge and truth.

The Call to Lead:

The Church inspires us, as Catholics, and in partnership with our educational leaders, to embrace our mission-driven vocations in service to Christ and families. We each have a part to play in reinforcing our Catholic identity by cultivating a Catholic culture, nurturing faith development, and incorporating Church traditions and doctrinal practices.

Answering the Call — Communion of Catholics:

We need to pray for Catholic education and take action to defend it. The call goes beyond Catholic educators to each and every Catholic to uphold and advance the mission of Catholic education.

God chooses the unlikely - just as he did his first Disciples – to spread the Good News. We too are called – despite any hesitations – to make a stand for Catholic education.

In support of Catholic education throughout Alberta and beyond, we Catholics have unity, a purpose, and an urgency to lead with courage and faith. We must be driven from the ground up with grassroots support rooted in prayer and the desire to fulfill God’s will for us. As Jesus said to Peter and Andrew, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." (Luke 5:4).

No one stands alone:

Grounded in our Catholic beliefs and fortified by God's love and our Catholic faith, each of us has a role to play, Fostering unity, cooperation, and clear communication, Catholic education is poised to prosper, safeguarding its valued traditions and securing its enduring influence.

The Power of Local GrACE Committees The Power of Local GrACE Committees

The key to our success as a Catholic education movement — as it was for the Early Church — is participation and encouragement. Let's reach out to and support anyone and everyone that we can enrol in our cause.

Active Participation: A Legacy from the Early Church

The Early Church thrived on active participation. Believers were not mere spectators; they engaged fully in worship, community life, and evangelization. This same spirit of active involvement and commitment is essential for the success and growth of the Catholic education movement today.

Participation and Encouragement

1. Active Engagement:

1. Just as early Christians were deeply involved in all aspects of their faith

community, members of the Catholic education movement must also be actively engaged. This includes not only educators and students, but parents, parishioners, and the wider community.

2. Encouraging everyone to participate in school activities, parish events,

and community service projects strengthens the bond within the Catholic

education community and promotes a shared mission.

2. Support and Outreach:

1. Outreach to all members of the community, regardless of their direct connection to Catholic education, is vital. This involves informing and educating the public about the unique benefits and values of Catholic education.

2. Support from the broader community can come in various forms: financial contributions, volunteering time and skills, or simply advocating for the importance of Catholic education in public forums.

Key Strategies for Participation and Outreach

3. Community Building:

1. Foster a sense of belonging and community among all collaborators in Catholic education. Regular gatherings, celebrations, and collaborative projects can help build a strong, united community.

2. Create platforms for dialogue and feedback, allowing all to share their experiences and suggestions for improving the educational environment.

4. Evangelization and Advocacy:

1. Follow the example of the early Church in evangelization, spreading the message of Catholic education’s benefits and its role in forming well-rounded individuals.

2. Advocate for the continued support and funding of Catholic schools at local

and provincial levels, highlighting their positive impact on society.

5. Collaboration with Parishes:

1. Strengthen the ties between Catholic schools and local parishes. Joint activities,

shared resources, and cooperative programs can enhance the spiritual and

educational experiences of students.

2. Encourage parishioners to take an active role in supporting their local Catholic

schools, through volunteering, mentorship, and participation in school events.

6.Embracing the Early Church’s Spirit

By embracing the spirit of active participation, support, and outreach exemplified by the Early Church, the Catholic education movement can thrive. This approach ensures that Catholic education remains a vibrant, influential, and inclusive force in the community, guiding students not only towards academic success but also towards moral and spiritual growth. Through collective effort and a shared mission, we can build a stronger future for Catholic education.

1 Thank you to the wonderful Speakers on the day for generously sharing their knowledge and wisdom with us. They enriched the day's discussions, and we remain grateful for their commitment and leadership in advancing our shared mission.

2. Thank you to our workshop Facilitators for their unwavering support for Catholic education as we forge ahead in our collective mission. The insights of the groups they facilitated motivate us to uphold the core values and principles of Catholic education.

3. Thank you to each and every one of our participants who took time out of their busy lives to be with us. Their willingness to share their wealth of knowledge and wisdom has left a lasting impression; their unique perspectives have not only enhanced our conversations but also ignited a sense of purpose in upholding the fundamental values and principles of Catholic education. Each and every one of you is an invaluable resource as we continue to advance our GrACE movement in support of Catholic education throughout Alberta and beyond.

4.Thank you to GrACE Chair, Archbishop Smith, who planned our GrACE Summit with Dr. Bryan Szumlas and Julien Hammond. Without their vision, we wouldn't be here. Their generous contribution of knowledge and wisdom truly resonated throughout the day and I can’t thank them enough.

5. Finally, thank you to a very special group of Colleagues who I am proud to call my Friends.

Firstly, the GrACE Board; my wonderful working friends, and the reason that I get up in the morning:-

  • Lorraine Simi Chellakudam, ACSTA Executive Assistant.
  • Sincere appreciation is extended to all members of the ACSTA Offices, particularly President Kelly Whelan, whose vital contribution was indispensable to the GrACE Summit's triumph. His collaboration with GrACE and his team's significant commitment were crucial in elevating the event to a remarkable celebration of faith, community, and engagement. President Whelan's dedication is a testament to the spirit of unity and shared goals that are essential for advancing Catholic education in Alberta. The backing and aid from Vice President Dawn Miller, Executive Director Brendan Cavanagh, and Communications Manager Charlotte Taillon have been instrumental in driving the Catholic education movement forward.

Notable members from CCSSA include:

  • President Paul Corrigan, Executive Director Scott Morrison, and Stacey MacNeil-Ayeh, AB Catholic Education Curriculum Resource Coordinator (ACE CRC), who are instrumental in ensuring the success and continued progress of GrACE.

Prominently featured from the Offices of the Archdiocese of Edmonton as GrACE's foremost champions are:

  • Father Paul Kavanagh, Mission Leadership Senior Lead and Vicar for Clergy
  • Father Jim Corrigan, Vicar General
  • Suzanne Brohier, Executive Assistant to the Archbishop
  • Julien Hammond, Principal Secretary to the Archbishop

Despite their already busy and demanding jobs, these individuals have become key influencers and drivers of the GrACE movement, advancing Catholic education throughout Alberta and beyond.

Here's to the newcomers, the seasoned veterans, and the behind-the-scenes workers: may our true partnership continue to thrive and succeed in the future.

Thank you from all of us at GrACE.

Go raibh míle maith agat! (Irish phrase for 'Thank you very much!')

GrACE's next Summit is planned for October 25, 2024 GrACE's next Summit is planned for October 25, 2024

In Alberta, Catholic Education Sunday and Catholic Education Week have traditionally been celebrated separately. They will now be combined into a single event.

In the 2023-2024 school year, Catholic Education Sunday in Alberta was observed on the first Sunday of November, while Catholic Education Week took place in May, aligning with World Catholic Education Day on Ascension Thursday.

To promote unity, these events will be consolidated into a single week-long celebration during the third week of October 2024.

The celebration will commence with Catholic Education Sunday Masses on October 19, 2024, and conclude with the GrACE Summit on October 25, 2024 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Calgary.

Follow GrACE on Facebook and Twitter. Post your pictures and tag us so we can share them and celebrate too. Thanks for being a grateful advocate in support of Catholic education!
