M-STEP Scores Sent Home Today - 4th & 5th Graders M-STEP Scores Sent Home Today - 4th & 5th Graders

Dear Parent/Guardian:

This week, you received your child’s Michigan State Summative Assessment results from the spring of 2026. Students in grades 3-5 took part in the M-STEP assessment in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition, 5th grade students took part in the M-STEP assessment in the areas of Science and Social Studies. These assessments were developed to measure Michigan students’ achievement on the Michigan Academic Standards and requires students to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which our instructional approach already supports.

Results from the M-STEP provide data the district can use to analyze curricular alignment to Michigan’s Academic Standards, to inform educational program evaluation, and to inform curricular and continuous improvement decisions at the school and/or district level.

M-STEP individual student data provides a snapshot of what a student knows and is able to do based on Michigan’s Academic Standards. Student level M-STEP data should also be used cautiously and in combination with local formative, benchmark, and summative assessment data to develop a complete picture of what the student knows and is able to do. The Troy School District uses a variety of literacy and math benchmark assessments to measure your child’s individual progress throughout the year. In addition, all students participate in other formative and summative assessments.

Below you will find links to the Michigan Department of Education’s Parent Guides for the state summative assessments.

Additional information about M-STEP and test results can be found on the Michigan Department of Education’s website Click Here. As always, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or school principal if you have questions about your child’s M-STEP results or your child’s progress overall. We look forward to helping your child have a successful school year.

BIST Overview BIST Overview

As discussed at our Wednesday Curriculum Night, the Troy School District has started a new system in our classrooms called BIST. You will learn more about this as the year progresses.

BIST stands for Behavioral Intervention Support Team. The team consists of all staff at Leonard, working together to ensure your child does his/her best learning!

We have established two boundaries or understandings that we all live by each day.

1. It’s never okay to be disruptive

2. It’s never okay to be hurtful.

We have also discussed three life skills that we hold each student accountable for each day.

1. I can do things, even when I don’t want to or they are difficult

2. I can be okay even when others are not

3. I can make good choices even when I am angry

When our students step outside one of the boundaries, and they will as they are learning, they will be redirected appropriately one time. If the behavior continues, s/he will be asked to move to the safe seat. This seat is not meant to be a punishment, but rather as a spot to stay safe from getting in trouble.

The student will continue working and/or listening to the teacher’s lesson from the safe seat. Upon the teacher’s discretion, the student will reconnect with learning once the boundaries have been re-established.

We will be incorporating these guidelines into our Leonard Think Sheets as a means of communication between home and school. Below is a copy of our building posters. You may wish to print them off and use them as they allow within your own family’s behavior system.

Students thrive when held to high standards and positive behavior expectations. We are excited to see our Leonard Leopards grow and learn together this year. We thank you for your continued support from home.

Respectfully,

Leonard Staff

Medical Information Medical Information

If your child has an important medical condition that will require attention/care at school, please reach out to Mrs. Haboush at nhaboush@troy.k12.mk.us as soon as possible. We will work together to ensure your children are safe at school. Our district has several Medical Action Plans available that your child's physician must complete to help guide us in providing the appropriate care (i.e. allergy, seizure, asthma, diabetes, etc.). Medical plans are available in the Power School Parent Portal.

Additionally, if your child will require medication at school (either daily or as an emergency), we will need the Medication Authorization Paperwork on file. This paperwork needs to be completed by a physician and we need a separate form for each medication (this includes any over-the-counter medications and prescriptions). You can access the paperwork in the Power School Parent Portal. The office cannot accept any medication without these authorizations and all medications must be current (no expired medications). Please note that an adult must bring the medication to the office for check-in (it cannot be brought to school in a child's backpack).

The link below has more information regarding important medical considerations.

School Supplies School Supplies

Our classroom teachers have curated a list of helpful school supplies for each grade level. If you would like to purchase supplies for this upcoming school year, please see the link below for a detailed list for each grade level. You are welcome to drop off the school supplies at school on Wednesday, August 19 between 4:00 - 5:00 PM (this helps to make the backpacks lighter on the first day of school).

An Extra Set of Clothes - A Backpack Stash An Extra Set of Clothes - A Backpack Stash

Please make sure that every student has an extra set of weather-appropriate clothes in their backpack (including shirt, pants, socks, and underwear). These can just be something old from their closet that can live in a plastic bag in their backpack. The clothes are helpful for so many reasons. Kids can spill their lunches, have a bathroom accident, or get muddy during recess. Having the extra clothes allows your child to quickly change and get back to the fun, and prevents us from having to interrupt your day. Without the extra set of clothes, we have to call home and have someone bring clothes up to the school. Thanks for your help with this!

Label, Label, Label! Label, Label, Label!

Each year I emphasize the importance of labeling your children's belongings so all their "things" make it back home. Inevitably, we donate a HUGE amount of clothing and gear multiple times each school year. Before donating, we look through each item. If we see a name, we are sure to return it to the child. Items without names (which is most of them), unfortunately are donated. Please take a few minutes to label the following items to help save you money -

  • Coats
  • Sweatshirts
  • Extra set of clothes
  • Lunchboxes
  • Backpacks
  • Water bottles
  • Snack containers
  • Gym shoes
  • Winter gear (when the time comes)

A Sharpie (permanent marker) can be your best friend! Just a quick note on the tag or the bottom of an item is so helpful. If you would rather use a fancier labeling method, you can consider purchasing custom labels through Name Bubbles (Leonard will receive a portion of the proceeds). These labels are dishwasher and laundry-safe (and they're cute!).

As you're getting school supplies ready for the new year, please remember to label your children's items so they aren't misplaced. While a black Sharpie works wonders (and is really all you need), you are also welcome to purchase customized labels for your child's gear. This school year we are partnering with the online store, Name Bubbles, to offer families another labeling solution. You can customize these labels with your child's name and an image. They are waterproof, dishwasher-safe, and laundry-safe. They come in a variety of sizes, designs, and packages. Be sure to use our Leonard link (as we get a portion of the proceeds). Thanks!

Food Service Updates Food Service Updates

Breakfast and lunches will be free again to all students this school year.

Although meals are free this school year, we strongly encourage families who might be eligible for Free and Reduced Meals to complete the application. This application can help your family receive assistance for field trips, sports fees (middle & high school), and more school fees. Applications will be sent home in the first week of school.

We always link the menus at the bottom of the Loop, so families can quickly see what's for breakfast and lunch each day. We've attached the first month here for your convenience.

PTO Information PTO Information

Our Leonard PTO is a wonderful organization that provides opportunities for our families to extend and enrich our community and our children's school experiences.

Did you know...

  • You're already a member!
  • There is no membership fee for our PTO - having a child attend Leonard is the only requirement.
  • You can come to one, some, or all of the meetings. Attending a meeting is mostly about making friends and learning about what's happening in the school. Also, just by attending a meeting, you aren't committing to volunteer in any way (although, there are always opportunities to pitch in if you're looking for some!).
