Faces of Neubert
Melia Carter - Social Worker
I’m Melia Carter, and this is my 12th year in the district as a school social worker. I’m passionate about neurodiversity-affirming care and making sure every student feels accepted for exactly who they are. When I’m not at school, you’ll probably find me lost in a good book, adventuring through a video game, or laughing with my husband and friends. I’m a lover of all things pink, and if it has polka dots, I’m instantly a fan! I’m excited for another year of connection, fun, and supporting our amazing students and families.
Neubert Staff Shoutouts!
At Neubert, we are so lucky to have such a dedicated and caring staff! We invite you to take a moment to recognize a staff member who has made a difference for your child(ren) or family. Your personal messages will be sent directly to the receiving staff member. Your kind words mean so much and help us celebrate the amazing work happening every day!
i-Ready Reports
Teachers are sending home your child’s i-Ready Family Report. This report is designed to help you better understand your child’s progress in both reading and math.
Inside the report, you will see:
-
Overall Performance Level – where your child is currently performing compared to grade-level expectations.
-
Domain Scores – how your child is doing in specific areas such as phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, numbers, algebra, or geometry, depending on grade level.
-
Growth Measures – information about how your child has progressed since their last diagnostic and how much growth is expected for the year.
-
Next Steps for Learning – areas where your child is ready to learn next, which guide teachers’ instruction.
-
Tips for Families – ideas for how you can support your child at home.
These reports are a great tool for seeing both your child’s strengths and areas for growth. If you have any questions after reviewing the report, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
At Neubert, we honor and value the diverse backgrounds of our students, families, and community members. Throughout the month, classes will engage in activities that highlight Hispanic culture, traditions, and influential figures who have made lasting impacts on our world.
We encourage families to celebrate at home too! You might:
-
Read books together by Hispanic authors 📚
-
Try cooking a traditional Hispanic recipe 🍲
-
Listen to music from Hispanic artists 🎶
-
Share stories and traditions from your own family’s heritage 💬
Together, let’s celebrate and learn from the cultures that make our community so vibrant!
National Bullying Prevention Month is observed annually in October to raise awareness about the impacts of bullying and to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The month-long campaign, led by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center, encourages people to unite against bullying and features a signature event called Unity Day on October 22nd, where participants wear and share the color orange to show support. Our teachers will be providing lessons and discussions that are designed to help students build empathy, strengthen relationships, and promote a culture of kindness and respect in our school throughout the entire month of October.
Our Lost and Found is bursting with lonely jackets, water bottles, and sweatshirts that are hoping to find their way back home! Please take a look at the pictures we’ve shared to see if any of these items belong to your child. To help our “lost treasures” get back to their owners even faster, we’d love for you to add your child’s name inside their belongings. That way, we can return them right away before they end up on another adventure in the Lost and Found!
Neubert Spirit Wear Days
Neubert Spirit Wear Days are back! Mark your calendars!
We are excited to share that starting October 1st, we will be recognizing students with Perfect Attendance each month! Students who come to school every day and on time will be eligible for a special reward as a way to celebrate their commitment to learning. We know that consistent attendance makes a big difference in academic success, and we want to encourage and celebrate those efforts.
To make these rewards even more special, we are also looking for donations from local businesses to help support and promote our students’ achievements. If you own or know of a local business that would like to contribute, please reach out to Christina Nowak. We would love to feature community support while celebrating our students!
Royal Broom Competition
The Royal Broom Competition begins Monday, September 29th!
Standard Response Protocol
As Superintendent Dr. Martina Smith shared in her summer communications, starting this year, our schools will be strengthening emergency response procedures by implementing the Standard Response Protocol and the Standard Reunification Method, both developed by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation.
The Standard Response Protocol outlines five clear actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. These actions are designed to help keep students and staff safe in a variety of situations, including medical events, severe weather, police activity near the school, and more.
In addition, District 300 is adopting the Standard Reunification Method to provide a safe and organized process for reuniting students with their families should an emergency occur.
To learn more about these safety enhancements, please review the Standard Response Protocol for the District 300 Community (PDF).
Goal 1: By May 2026, Neubert Elementary School will reduce chronic absenteeism by 3%.
Why does this goal matter?
Consistent attendance helps children build friendships, follow routines, and keep pace with learning.
How can families help?
Families can help by maintaining daily routines, ensuring their child gets to school on time, and reaching out if obstacles arise.
Goal 2: By May 2026, Neubert Elementary School will decrease the number of Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs) from 3.8 average incidents a day to 3.4 average incidents a day.

A safe, predictable, and positive school environment allows students to feel secure, respected, and ready to learn.
How can families help?
Families can help by reinforcing school goals and values at home and praising effort and improvement, not just outcomes.
Why does this goal matter?
Students who feel connected to their school are more motivated, more confident, and more willing to take academic risks.
How can families help?
Families can help by partnering with the school and staying engaged in family events, and reinforcing at home that their child’s ideas and opinions matter.
Goal 4: By May 2026, Neubert Elementary School will increase students’ level of proficiency in reading by 3%.
Why does this goal matter?
When students become confident readers and writers, they gain the skills to think critically, solve problems, and express themselves clearly.
How can families help?
Families can help by reading together daily, talking about stories and new words, and asking their child questions that get them thinking more deeply about what they read.
Why does this goal matter?
Math builds critical thinking, perseverance, and the ability to approach challenges with confidence.
How can families help?
Families can help by playing math games, practicing facts in fun ways, and encouraging their child to explain how they solved a problem.
We will keep you informed with how we're doing on our goals as the year progresses!
Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a team of passionate parents and staff who work together to make Neubert an even better place to learn and grow. From planning fun family events to supporting teachers and students, the PTO helps build the strong, connected community our kids deserve. Stay tuned for ways to get involved!
