HSS Newsletter

What a busy week! Please join us tomorrow for our rescheduled Walk and Bike to School Day. We will leave at 7:30 from Colburn Park, 7:40 from Eldridge Street, and 7:45 from Wolf Road. Bundle up because it's going to be unseasonably chilly.
On Thursday, Double Treble will be performing their spring concert in the evening and then we have two events on Friday. First, the fourth grade will have their culminating event, the 18th Annual Watershed Congress at Storr's Hill. Back at HSS, we will be hosting our next to last school sing in the gym on Friday. Parents are invited to attend and we hope to see you there. There will be one more parent school sing on June 6th.

Nurse's Notes
NEWS FROM THE NURSE
National Handwashing Day was Monday, May 5
Our annual HSS handwashing experiment has started. It will be interesting to see the effects that different handwashing strategies have on the cleanliness of hands. Stay tuned for results. . .
A recent study conducted by NORC (formerly called the National Opinion Research Center) at the University of Chicago found that nearly half of Americans surveyed skipped washing their hands at critical times. According to the results, the top three situations that prompted people to wash their hands were: after using the bathroom, after handling food, and after handling human or animal waste. Some people even forgot to wash their hands regardless of the situation they were in - yuck!
Screen Free Week: May 5 - May 9
Some students elected to participate in a Screen Free day, days or week. The amount of time that the average person spends on social media has significantly increased from around 90 minutes a day in 2012 to over 2 hours a day now.
Ticks
Over the last couple of weeks, I have assisted in many tick removals from students. According to NH Department of Health and Human Services, here are some methods to protect oneself from ticks:
Wear light-colored clothes that cover arms and legs so ticks can be more easily seen.
Tuck pants into socks before going into wooded or grassy areas.
Perform daily tick checks to look for ticks on the body, especially warm places like behind the knees, ears, groin, belly button, and the back and neck.
Shower soon after returning indoors to wash off any unattached ticks and check clothes for any ticks that might have been carried inside. Placing dry clothes in the dryer on high heat for ten minutes (one hour for wet or damp clothes) effectively kills ticks.
Pets returning inside may also bring ticks with them. Performing tick checks and using tick preventatives on pets will reduce this.
Should you find an attached and/or engorged tick, it is always recommended to call your medical provider’s office and speak to a nurse. Answering some quick questions can usually determine the best course of treatment.
