Happy Weekend!

We cannot believe that we are almost at the end of September. Parent Teacher Conferences will be taking place during the week of October 5th. Please plan on scheduling a conference with your student's HOMEROOM teacher during this time! Scroll through this newsletter to locate the SignUp Genius link. Let us know if you have any questions!

Sincerely, The 6th Grade Teachers

Ms. Simon, Ms. Eliason, Ms. Hines & Mr. Crump

Hello from Your Counselor, Anne Gonglach! Hello from Your Counselor, Anne Gonglach!

Hello Pine Lane Families!

We have been busy in our counseling classroom lessons, learning and practicing a variety of important social-emotional skills. In September, students learned more about how I, as the school counselor, support them and how they can contact me if needed. We have also been working on skills that help students better understand themselves, build positive relationships, manage emotions, and be successful at school.

This October, we'll explore empathy. Empathy is an important skill that helps others to feel seen. It is also a great skill to have when navigating relationships!

I am excited to continue learning and growing with our students throughout the year!

Math - Ms. Simon

Kodiak Bears, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears

This week was spent dividing fractions! Students worked with whole numbers, simple fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers to gain the practice necessary for next week's test. On Monday, we will review all things decimals. Tuesday will be a review of all things fractions. The Topic 1 Assessment will be on Wednesday, September 30th. Students can create a handwritten notecard to help them study for the test. Also, another reminder that all Topic 1 homework is due no later than Wednesday, September 30th. Any outstanding homework after that date will be logged as a zero.

Polar Bears

We jumped into Topic 2 this week - rational numbers and the coordinate plane. We discussed opposites, absolute value, and how to plot coordinate points. There were a lot of "ah-ha's" when reviewing the pretest and first few lessons. We finished the week up with coordinate grid art - kind of like a build it as you go dot to dot worksheet. The Topic 2 Assessment will be on Friday, October 1st. Students can create a handwritten notecard to help them study for the test. Any outstanding homework from the first two topics must be turned in by Friday, October 1, or they will be logged as a zero.

Reading - Ms. Eliason

This past week we continued our work with responding to the text by comparing and contrasting two articles using SRSD strategies. The process is takes a bit longer at the beginning of the year to ensure students understand the organization that's needed to be successful in writing. Because of the need to slow down, only the Polar Bear group was able to begin the Unit One Assessment this Friday. All other blocks did a fun review day, and will take their test next week. I'm really proud of how hard these kiddos work!

Writing - Mr. Crump

This week we worked on making a strong thesis statement and topic introduction for our writing. Students are showing a lot of growth when it comes to writing!

Next week, we will finish up and revise our essays. We will see if students achieved their first writing goal and begin argumentative writing. I am looking forward to going through every students writing next week.

Science & Social Studies - Ms. Hines

We kicked off our new unit in Social Studies this week! This unit will focus on civilizations, specifically the Mesoamericans. Throughout the week, students have been working on learning about the seven characteristics of civilizations. We ended the week by getting to know present-day Mexico, which will help guide our learning over the next few weeks!

Classroom Store Classroom Store

Our students will be using ClassBank this year, which is a digital classroom economy platform. At the end of each week, students will have the opportunity to purchase things with the money they earn from our classroom stores. Due to this, the 6th Grade Teachers are looking for items (candy, chips, fruit, fidgets, snacks, and little trinkets) to stock our classroom stores.

If you are able, please send items in with your students this week, or throughout the year!
