We’re still trying to wrap our heads around this one… - Educational Passages Podcast

Season 4 of the Educational Passages Podcast continues with our “Imagine This” series — where the stories behind our miniboats reveal something even deeper than ocean currents and GPS tracks. Each episode invites you to step into a moment of possibility — to feel the anticipation, the uncertainty, and the extraordinary connections that unfold when students send something small into a very big ocean. Now press play, close your eyes, and imagine this:Ever heard of six degrees of separation? Well, this is a story with only one. In May 2026, three miniboats found themselves connected by a thread no one had ever planned for. To understand how, you have to rewind ten years, to a brand-new research vessel's very first cruise and a high school science project that nobody quite expected would still be sailing in 2026. Along the way: a buoy array, the Azores, an Albatross, and a decade-long coincidence we're still trying to wrap our heads around.

What happened to the tracking? What happened to the tracking?

Earlier this week, ANITA stopped sending out data from her air and surface water temperature sensors. We checked in with Cassie, she was able to tell us that for some reason, our sensor box is no longer functioning. Did we take on some water? Was there a huge wave that knocked something loose? We honestly will not know until ANITA finds safety on a shore somewhere.

We are very thankful to Daryn for installing that brand new GPS tracker, so that we may still follow ANITA's travels.

At Dudley Middle School, 26 sixth and seventh grade students decided to embark on a journey with three faculty members. The project is being funded by MIT Sea Grant through their STREAM Grant which supports coastal education and community science. It was inspired by the Thompson Middle School miniboat project, the TMS Sea Challenger. DMS students met the TMS miniboat crew and URI Graduate School of Oceanography staff at the 2023 Ocean Race Stopover in Newport, RI.

2026 Recycling Regatta Friday June 5 2026 Recycling Regatta Friday June 5

Our 5th grade Champions of the Sea program will be traveling to Mason Road School on Friday June 5th. We will be traveling on the dismissal buses at the end of the day. Pick up will be at the Mason Road parking lot at 3:45 PM.

The Recycle Regatta is a free, fun, hands-on competition for K-12 students to participate in from anywhere! Participants build a model sailboat from recycled and repurposed materials and race to victory while discovering engineering, mathematics, sailing, buoyancy, and stewardship.

We will set our sailboats out from the Dudley beach. Each of our sailboats will all contain a finder's note for the individual that finds out boat. We can't wait to hear from local community members and share the experiences next week with you!
