Fuel Spill Update February 2024

Department of Ecology Notice about Excavation
Air monitoring and potential gas odor
During excavation, mild gasoline odor may be noticeable near the site. When excavation begins, enhanced air monitoring on the site will ensure the safety of response workers.
Community and School air monitoring will continue to ensure protection of the public. Based on sampling data, we do not expect air sampling levels to exceed safety thresholds.
Student, Staff, and Family Safety
Conway school has protocols in place for monitoring the air quality in and around the school. If odors are detected we move students to a new location and the department of ecology comes to the school to take additional air samples to ensure everyone's safety.
Cofferdam and Excavation
A cofferdam was installed over the last week (see picture below). The cofferdam will collect water and soil to prevent it from going into the hill ditch and causing contamination from the fuel that is still in the soil.
Preparations for excavation are in progress with excavation likely beginning within the next week. A dewatering system will be installed to remove water from the soil inside the cofferdam. Water removed from the soil will be cleaned and returned to the environment. Contaminated soil will be excavated for disposal. Surface water sampling during excavation will continue.
