🖥️ Director's Blog: Living Our Mustang Values Through Technology
Doing Our Best First Instruction
As we move deeper into the school year, I want to pause and recognize the incredible work you’re doing. Every day, you are integrating technology to strengthen Tier 1 instruction and providing students with your best first instruction. Whether it’s leveraging digital tools to differentiate, using platforms to spark engagement, or modeling problem-solving when tech doesn’t cooperate, you are showing students that learning in a digital age is rooted in resilience, creativity, and purpose.
Our district’s culture provides three powerful lenses for this work - Model Mustang (our Portrait of a Learner), STRONG (secondary PBIS), and PRIDE (elementary PBIS). These expectations are not limited to one area of school life; they are essential in guiding how we use technology with intentionality. By connecting instructional technology practices to the same expectations we set for students, we make our culture visible in every classroom interaction.
Here’s a polished version of your section—streamlined for clarity, educator-facing tone, and consistency in formatting:
Model Mustang & Instructional Technology
Being a Model Mustang means modeling for students what it looks like to use technology with purpose and integrity:
Innovative → Experiment with new tools like Magic School to introduce generative AI, leverage interactive platforms such as Pear Deck or Pear Assessments, and integrate blended learning strategies.
Resilient → Treat tech hiccups as opportunities to model problem-solving. Whenever possible, invite students to collaborate with you in finding solutions.
Collaborative → Use shared documents (Google Workspace, Kami, Pear Deck, and more) to build teamwork and foster authentic collaboration.
Global → Connect students to voices, perspectives, and resources beyond our classroom walls.
Empowered → Give students agency to choose the right tools (presentations, videos, audio, or other formats) that best express their learning.
STRONG in the Secondary Classroom
Our secondary PBIS expectations frame digital learning in meaningful ways:
Safe → Promoting digital safety, privacy, and responsible online interactions.
Trustworthy → Using Generative AI and other digital resources responsibly, modeling proper attribution.
Respectful → Setting norms for device use and balanced screen time.
Own It → Encourage students to take responsibility for their digital learning.
Never Settle → Challenging learners to move beyond the “easy option” and pursue deeper tech applications.
Get Engaged → Harnessing polls, quizzes, interactive platforms, and other resources to spark curiosity.
PRIDE in Elementary Classrooms
Even our youngest learners can see how technology connects to PRIDE:
Prepared → Having devices charged and ready.
Respectful → Showing kindness and patience with shared resources, using devices for their intended purpose, and supporting classmates who may need extra help.
Inclusive → Use UDL tools like text-to-speech, translation, or captions to ensure all students can access learning.
Determined → Encouraging persistence when learning something new.
Engaged → Use instructional technology tools such as Pear Deck, Screencastify, Kami, and other age-appropriate platforms to make learning interactive and meaningful.
"When we frame technology through PRIDE, we reinforce that digital citizenship starts in elementary school."
Closing Reflection
Technology is not separate from our culture but an extension of it. When we anchor our digital practices in Model Mustang, STRONG, and PRIDE, we show students that expectations don’t stop at the classroom door; they shape how we learn, collaborate, and grow in a connected world. This month, I encourage you to share with colleagues one way you’ve seen our values come alive through technology. Together, we’ll continue strengthening Tier 1 instruction that is innovative, resilient, and deeply connected to who we are as a district.
🤖 Spotlight Feature: Ozobots Bring Literature to Life
Ozobots are small, programmable robots that can be coded using color patterns or block-based coding platforms like Blockly. In classrooms, they offer students a hands-on way to merge creativity with critical thinking by turning abstract concepts into visible, moving representations.
During a recent visit to Mary Giaimo’s high school ELA elective, Sci-Fi Fantasy Literature, students used Ozobots to explore themes from Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot and its film adaptation. By programming the robots with color codes and Blockly, they created movements—such as a nitro boost to represent intensity or a spin to illustrate internal conflict—that reflected character actions and thematic development. Students then presented their projects, explaining how each robot’s movements connected to the texts and sharing thoughtful interpretations of both the book and the movie. The activity showcased how literature and film can come alive through hands-on coding in an engaging and memorable way.
Transition from 📝GradeCam to 🍐Pear Assessment
As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline resources, reduce redundancy, and be better financial stewards, GradeCam will no longer be supported after this school year. Instead, we will continue to build our assessment system around Pear Assessment.
There are several important reasons for this transition:
-
Alignment with State Testing: Pear Assessment allows us to design and modify assessments that more closely mirror OSTs, including multimodal question types that better prepare students for state assessments.
-
Comprehensive Reporting: Pear Assessment provides stronger data features, including student performance over time, subgroup analysis, and standards mastery reporting—all in one place.
-
Student Accommodations & Tools: Pear offers built-in supports such as calculators, read-aloud, and other accessibility features to meet the diverse needs of our learners.
-
Secure Testing Environment: Pear Assessment includes a dedicated kiosk mode that locks down student devices to ensure test security and integrity.
-
Paper-Pencil Option: Pear Assessment also provides bubble sheet assessments; however, uploading requires a copy machine rather than a document camera.
-
Unified Platform: By consolidating to Pear Assessment, we eliminate the overlap of multiple tools, making it easier for teachers to manage assessments and for students to have a consistent experience.
To support this transition, time will be provided during upcoming PD sessions to help staff learn the Pear platform and migrate assessments from GradeCam. Additional resources and training will also be shared to ensure everyone feels confident in using Pear to its fullest potential.
We recognize that this transition represents a significant change for some of our SHS teachers and departments who have relied on GradeCam as part of their assessment practice. Both the Curriculum Department and the Technology Department are committed to supporting you through this process by providing training, resources, and ongoing guidance. Our goal is to make this shift as smooth as possible while ensuring that the tools we use continue to enhance instruction and student learning. Thank you for your flexibility as we make this important shift to strengthen instruction and better support both teachers and students.
🚀 Google Classroom + PowerSchool Integration Arrives!
Quick Tips from Jessica Frenchik (our Instructional Integration Specialist who helped pilot this)
- Make sure each assignment in Google Classroom has a due date — it won’t sync without one.
- Grades will still import even if a student doesn’t click “Turn In.”
- You must return assignments for grades to sync. Simply entering scores without returning won’t import them.
- The integration pulls in the assignment name (30 character limit), category, and grade.
- Comments left in Google Classroom do not import into PowerSchool.
📊 Highly Utilized Instructional Tools Used In September

🎨 Canva for Education – District Team Access
We know many staff members have already joined Canva and noticed “building groups” popping up. Unfortunately, those groups are not something we control and anyone can create them.
To simplify access and provide consistency, we’ve created a district-wide Canva Team. By joining this team, you’ll have:
✅ The ability to share templates and designs district-wide
✅ Central approval from the tech department to keep everything streamlined
✅ You do not need to leave any current groups to join
How to join our SCS District Canva Team:
- Click HERE to verify your scsmustangs.org account as an Educator account.
- Click HERE to join out team.
- The Technology Department will approve your request.
This setup ensures everyone has access to the same powerful design tools, while keeping sharing and collaboration simple across the district.
NEW: We have updated the Team to have a Branding Kit to include district logos and colors.
