Need to Know
New tryout for Futsal on Friday Oct 30: A new tryout time has been added for Friday, October 30 from 1:30-3:00pm in the Speirs gym. This is the first mandatory tryout for all players interested in joining a Bantam futsal team. This tryout takes the place of the regular MS phys. ed. class for that day. Coaches have been advised; however, players should notify their fall phys. ed. coaches of their intention to attend this tryout. If players have a conflict with this tryout time, please reach out to Mr. Banerjee (banerjeen@selwyn.ca) to make arrangements. The 2nd and 3rd tryouts remain on Nov 4 & 5 as previously posted.

Basketball tryouts for both bantam teams (Grade 7&8 players) are Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 from 9:30-11am in the Speirs gym. Plan to attend both tryout dates if you’re serious about joining a team! Wear SHS PE clothing, athletic shoes and bring a water bottle.

Halloween festivities in Middle School!
Guess the candy in the jar - 1$/guess beginning on Monday Oct 26 during recesses outside Ms. Beech’s office. The winner will be announced on October 30!
Pumpkin Decorating Contest - Paper pumpkin cut outs will be shared with each core group on Monday and the judging will take place on Friday. Prizes will be awarded on Friday!
Thursday, October 29 - we are encouraging students to participate in Halloween Accessories Day. They can wear Halloween themed socks, belt and tie if they choose (with their regular school uniform).
On Friday, October 30, students are encouraged to wear costumes to school in place of the school uniform. House points will be awarded and a costume contest will take place at lunch hour. This is not a free dress day; if students are not in costume, they should be in regular uniform. The school theme this year is Heroes & Villains, and students are invited to join that theme or dress in any costume of their choice. Props, weapons and face masks/coverings are NOT permitted.
Halloween Costumes: As Halloween approaches we invite you to have a conversation with your children about the intention of Halloween costumes to help guide them in their selection. Be thoughtful not to select a costume that makes fun of human traits, identities, cultures, or race. To this end, we invite students (and parents who are coming to school in costume) to consider the following questions when selecting their costumes: Is my choice tokenizing a person and/or identity? Does my costume choice align with the principles of Veritas and represent myself in the way I want to be seen? Let’s keep Halloween safe and inclusive!
Middle School Halloween Dance/Costume Party at ECS October 29: Grade 7&8 students are invited to this inter-school event taking place on Thursday, October 29, 7-10pm at ECS. Advance ticket sales only ($10 admission), at Ms. Beech’s office. Students must show their student ID cards on entry. Snacks will be sold at the dance, doors will close at 8pm. Ms. Corbie will be attending as a Selwyn House chaperone.

Selwyn House Running Club: Middle and Senior students are welcome to join in this monthly activity! The first monthly morning run will be next week on Thursday, Oct. 29. If you're interested, you can feel free to email Mr. Elbling (elblingd@selwyn.ca) or just show up!

Message from the Outdoor Ed. Team - All Star Success on Grade 8 trips: From calm weather to white-capped waves on the open lake; from sun-bathed afternoons to rainy mornings and freezing nights; from lucky fishermen to riddle nights around the fire; from portages to camp set-up, to laughter-filled game activities, somewhere on this lake, hours away from the city, surrounded by trees ablaze with fall colours. This year’s Grade 8 trips had it all. Was it always easy? No; every one of the four trips came with its own challenges—but at the end of the day it’s those challenges that make a trip truly rewarding. Being out there takes grit and hard work—and it brings joy, awe, pride, and camaraderie. Putting the group first—taking care of each other’s needs before our own—is what we strive for on these trips. It’s not an easy thing to do. Thus, we award those students who go above and beyond to make it happen. At assemblies this month we recognized the hard-working, joyous gentlemen who were honoured with the Outdoor Ed. All Star Pin. A group photo of the honourees is attached. Until next year, Grade 8s! From Your Outdoor Ed. Team.
Message from the PVA: The PVA (Parent Volunteer Association) invites all SHS new parents to join them on Friday, November 13 @ 8:15am for a coffee morning meet-up. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other new parents. Meeting will be at Mouton Noir at Westmount Rec Centre (4675 St- Catherine Street West Westmount H3Z 1S4).

The work is expected to be completed early in the week of October 26, weather permitting. Parking on these streets will be prohibited during this period, but pedestrian access will be maintained. We can expect restricted flow of traffic on these streets, especially during pickup and drop off times. To reduce the amount of vehicular traffic, we request that parents of older students make arrangements to drop off and pick up students on nearby streets, or use public transportation if possible, until the work is complete.
