How to Own Your Stripes - Top 10 Skills for Student Success
As we conclude the first marking period and set future goals for the second marking period. Student are reminded to "Own One's Stripes", and focus on the following "Top 10 Skills for Academic Success" (see below).
Attendance Awareness
Why it's #1: You can’t succeed if you’re not present. Attendance directly affects academic performance, credit attainment, and relationships with teachers.Goal-Setting & Planning
Why it's #2: A clear four-year plan empowers students to make purposeful academic and career choices. Planning ahead ensures students stay on track for graduation and post-secondary success.Time Management
Why it's #3: Learning how to prioritize, meet deadlines, and use time wisely (especially during SRT) builds the habits needed for high school and beyond.Self-Advocacy & Accountability
Why it's #4: Students must learn to ask for help, reflect on their actions, and take ownership of their behavior. These are life skills that impact academic performance and personal growth.Positive Relationships
Why it's #5: Feeling connected to school through adults and peers increases engagement and motivation. Relationships create a support system for students.Digital Literacy
Why it's #6: Navigating digital platforms (StudentVue, ParentVue, Google Classroom) is crucial for keeping up with assignments, grades, and school communication.Communication Habits
Why it's #7: Strong two-way communication between school, students, and parents ensures everyone is aligned and informed.Engagement & Involvement
Why it's #8: Students involved in sports, clubs, or activities are more likely to feel a sense of belonging and do better academically.Respect & Responsibility
Why it's #9: Understanding and following rules (e.g., dress code, phone policy) supports a safe, respectful learning environment and reduces distractions.Awareness of Support Resources
Why it's #10: While vital, support systems can only help if students and parents are aware of them and willing to engage. Proactivity here often comes after some of the other foundational skills.
Congratulations to the Academic Letter Recipients
1st Marking Period Report Cards Coming Soon
The end of the 1st marking period was October 17th and Teacher Grades are due on Friday, October 24th. After we also get grades from our outside partners (i.e. GCI, Mott, U of M, etc.) we will release grades via Parent Vue/Student Vue. Report cards will NOT be mailed.
Remember, 1st marking period grades are worth 40% of the semester grade. Semester grades are determined as follows: 1st mp (40%) + 2nd mp (40%) + Semester Exams (20%) = Overall semester grade. Example grade calculation using 75% 1st marking period and 80% second marking period and a 70% on semester exam grade ; (.75)(.40) + (.80)(.40) + (.70)(.20) = .30 + .32 + .14 = .76 = 76% or C for the overall semester grade.
1st marking period (8/19 - 10/17/25) = 40% of 1st semester grade
2nd marking period (10/20 - 12/16/25) = 40% of 1st semester grade
Semester Exams (December 17, 18, & 19, 2025) = 20% of 1st semester grade (This is a change from previous years for semester exams)!
Overall semester grades are what gets put on the official transcript in January, after grades are due 1/7/26.

United Nations - 17 Sustainable Development Goalds
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
The SDGs build on decades of work by countries and the UN, including the UN Department of Economic & Social Affairs.

Work Permits
Under 16 years: https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/ber/wage-and-hour/work-permits
Age 16–17 yrs: https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/ber/wage-and-hour/work-permits
- Beginning April 2, 2025, HB 5594 changed work-hour restrictions for 14- and 15-year-olds to align with federal law, limiting them to 3 hours per school day, 18 hours per school week, and 40 hours per non-school week, with work allowed only between 7 AM and 7 PM (or 9 PM from May 31 until Labor Day)
- Work Permits Shifting to LEO - PA 196 of 2024 moves the responsibility for issuing work permits from schools to the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity starting no later than October 1, 2026. Schools will still retain the authority to revoke permits for attendance or academic concerns, maintaining a key leverage point for student engagement.
- There will be some additional, minimal process for employers and minors (or their parents), as well as a new database of authorized youth employers available online, but that process will be handled entirely by LEO once they take over the work permit system.
