2024 2025 Breakfast Book Club!
Check out the book titles that we are going to choose from
You will choose 6 books that you are interested in reading from these book titles.
The day of our book club meeting, we will gather in Mrs. Platz's room or the Media Center and discuss the book together. Everyone will be responsible to bring one food item to a meeting so that we can have some yummy breakfast while we have a lively discussion together!
COME TO OUR FIRST BOOK CLUB MEETING AND VOTE
- Do you love to read? When you have down time in the classroom do you pick up a book?
- Maybe you CURRENTLY are not a big reader, but you enjoy meeting with other kids and discussing things. In our book club, YOU run the club. Your fellow book club members and you look at the books Mrs. Platz has for our book club and VOTE on which ones you would like to read this year.
- No Quizzes, NO Vocabulary tests, NO projects, NOTHING but reading the book and enjoying talking about it with each other. Mrs. Platz will guide the group on how to have fun discussing the things you think are important to discuss.
- We eat breakfast together. The four things that we have each book club meeting are Drinks, bagels, fruit, and some sort of delish sweet ( muffins, donuts, etc.) Everyone in the club brings the item assigned to two of the four meeting that they attend.
- If you REALLY want to read more books, you can come to all our meetings but might need to purchase your own book.
- Some of the books will not be chosen to be read by the club. No worries! You can still take that book out of our school library!
- Good Food and Good Conversation go great together!

Mrs. Platz will create the timeline of when you will come to our club meetings, and what you will be bringing to each meeting. You will get the book the month BEFORE so you can read at your leisure.
WHEN YOU GET THE BOOK: One suggestion is to break the book into 4 sections using a sticky note. Then you can read 1/4 it each week. If you are anything like Mrs. Platz, you will not be able to put the book down and will finish it within a few days.
NEW THIS YEAR: Students will be in charge of assigning books to our members and collecting them and checking off the books as they come in after our meetings. We will also have jobs for members of the club that we will choose together.

Scritch, Scratch - A Ghost Story
"This is a teeth-chattering, eyes bulging, shuddering-and-shaking, chills-at-the-back-of-your-neck ghost story. I loved it!"―R.L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps series
For fans of Small Spaces and the Goosebumps series by R.L Stine comes a chilling ghost story based on real Chicago history about a malevolent spirit, an unlucky girl, and a haunting mystery that will tie the two together.
Claire has absolutely no interest in the paranormal. She's a scientist, which is why she can't think of anything worse than having to help out her dad on one of his ghost-themed Chicago bus tours. She thinks she's made it through when she sees a boy with a sad face and dark eyes at the back of the bus. There's something off about his presence, especially because when she checks at the end of the tour...he's gone.
Claire tries to brush it off, she must be imagining things, letting her dad's ghost stories get the best of her. But then the scratching starts. Voices whisper to her in the dark. The number 396 appears everywhere she turns. And the boy with the dark eyes starts following her.
Claire is being haunted. The boy from the bus wants something...and Claire needs to find out what before it's too late.
The Underneath
A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath.
Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten's one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O'Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love -- and its opposite, hate -- the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility.
All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley - a great big swollen spoiled bully. Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years.
But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry - and anyone who reads about him - will find unforgettable.
The Ickabog
Once upon a time there was a tiny kingdom called Cornucopia, as rich in happiness as it was in gold, and famous for its food. From the delicate cream cheeses of Kurdsburg to the Hopes-of-Heaven pastries of Chouxville, each was so delicious that people wept with joy as they ate them.
But even in this happy kingdom, a monster lurks. Legend tells of a fearsome creature living far to the north in the Marshlands... the Ickabog. Some say it breathes fire, spits poison, and roars through the mist as it carries off wayward sheep and children alike. Some say it's just a myth...
And when that myth takes on a life of its own, casting a shadow over the kingdom, two children - best friends Bert and Daisy - embark on a great adventure to untangle the truth and find out where the real monster lies, bringing hope and happiness to Cornucopia once more.
Featuring full color illustrations by children from across the United States and Canada, this original fairy tale from one of the world's most celebrated storytellers will captivate readers of all ages.
Jefferson Township Education Association sponsored our Book Club again!
Books, Books, and More Books, oh My!
Each year Mrs. Platz puts in a Jefferson Township Education Association Public Education Partnership (PEP) grant for a Parent Child Book club. For the past two years, she has been able to purchase $500 of Newberry Award Winners, Classics, and NY Times best sellers for her enrichment groups. In addition to this funding, the JTEA purchased $500 of Read Across NJ books for all of our elementary schools. This year our club ( combined White Rock and Stanlick) will be purchasing $400 worth of books for our club. Mrs. Platz will introduce some new award winners that you can sign up to read this year.
About Mrs. Platz and the history of Book Club
One of the goals of Book Club is to bring as many genres to our club as possible, great reads, and make sure that we are hitting the interests of our club members. When we started the club, we decided that the only requirement of it was that you needed to love reading, and that you would read the entire book before we met. No quizzes, no tests, no worksheets, no vocabulary words..... just great discussion.
Mrs. Platz is an avid reader. Over the years her interests in reading have changed, but one thing is consistent, she loves to be pulled into a great story. All of the books that were chosen for this year were either a favorite of the librarian or Mrs. Platz, a winning book of a literary award, or a classic read. Some of our books have been retired since every person in our school has read the book. Mostly that happens because our members talk up the book!
You can find Mrs. Platz cuddled up in her recliner with a book most evenings. She has three adult children, Lisa, Lauren, and Robyn, and lives with her husband Mr. Platz and their cat Mango. Some of her favorites when she was in fifth grade were Pippl Longstocking, the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Series, The Secret Garden, All of the Judy Blume books, and Charlotte's Web and Trumpet of the Swan. She is convinced that books have shaped her world by introducing her to places and things she had never dreamed of before.
You can contact her by stopping by her room, emailing her, or checking out her google classroom page for Book Club. Her room is next to the Media Center. The old Makerspace Room.
