MESSAGE FROM MR. TOOMEY - SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE FROM MR. TOOMEY - SUPERINTENDENT

March has been a jam-packed month across Hanover Township Public Schools, filled with energy, progress, and many opportunities to celebrate our students.

From Read Across America and honoring Dr. Seuss, to Music in Our Schools Month, Pi Day, St. Patrick’s Day, the first day of spring, and more, there has been no shortage of excitement and meaningful experiences throughout our schools.

Our grade-level shows are well underway, showcasing the talents and confidence of our students, and we are looking forward to this weekend’s spring musical, The Addams Family, at Memorial Junior School. These performances are a testament to the dedication of our students and the staff who support them, both on and off the stage.

Academically, our students continue to make meaningful gains as we move through the year. With approximately two-thirds of the school year behind us, there is a strong sense of momentum in our classrooms. The longer daylight, the start of spring sports, and the hope of more spring-like weather ahead all signal that nature is reawakening, and with it, we are beginning to see the blossoms of the hard work that has been taking place since September.

Behind the scenes, our district continues to navigate a challenging budget landscape. We invite you to join us or view the recording of tonight’s Board of Education meeting, where the preliminary budget will be reviewed prior to submission to the County Business Office. The formal budget presentation will take place at the Special Board of Education meeting on April 28.

As we look ahead to the final stretch of the school year, we remain focused, optimistic, and proud of all that our students and staff continue to accomplish.

To those who observe, we hope those who celebrated Eid had a wonderful holiday, and we wish all who are celebrating Passover and Easter a joyful holiday. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable spring break.

Author Day

Author Nancy Krulik visited Bee Meadow School and shared a positive, interactive presentation with our students. She solicited responses from them based on her questions about character traits, plot, and other story elements. From this information, she created a story that she shared with the staff and students, despite how outlandish some of the ideas may have been! Everyone enjoyed her program and some of our 4th and 5th graders had a special lunch with her.

BMS Clubs

Two of our clubs currently meeting are “Old Skool Games” and “Storybook Club.” In Old Skool Games, Mrs. Dakak and Ms. Saianto introduce students to fun, physical games from the past - SPUD, Wiffle Ball, Capture the Flag, etc. Students enjoy playing these various games each week.

In Storybook Club, our fifth graders partner with kindergarteners, interacting through story reading. Fifth graders read aloud to their kindergarten partner and work with them to complete an activity related to the story. Mrs. Dakak serves as the advisor for this club.

Dress Like Your Favorite Storybook Character

As part of our focus on reading for the two weeks of “One Book, One District,” several themed dress-up days were scheduled to show support for reading. Many of our students and some of the staff participated daily, including dressing as their favorite character. Thank you to all who participated in this fun day!

Interactive Bulletin Board

Students in PACT have been studying different codes and how they work. To share what they learned, they designed an interactive bulletin board that the whole school could enjoy. Each section of the board was tailored to a specific grade level, so everyone could participate and explore codes at their own level. It became a fun way for students to practice decoding, challenge each other, and see how creative coding can be.

LEAD

Each week during the winter months, Officer Malasig and Detective Zakrzewski work with our 5th grade students on the LEAD program, Law Enforcement Against Drugs. The program focuses on social and emotional learning (goal setting, decision making, managing emotions, communication, and relationships), as well as drug and violence prevention (managing mistakes, peer-pressure refusal, effects of alcohol use, effects of tobacco use, and effects of marijuana use). Students learn about these topics in a safe setting, through fun and interactive lessons designed to build self-confidence and empower students. The program’s topics and goals align nicely with our current character education program and will further enhance our work in this area.

Multiplication Madness

Each year in March, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 participate in Multiplication Madness – a friendly competition among homerooms focusing on multiplication facts from 0-12. Classes earn points based on their class average and the winning class earns an extra recess period later in the spring! This is a creative and fun competition for students to practice their basic facts. A special thank you to Ms. Maloney for bringing this to BMS and organizing this each year!

The Garden State

Our fourth grade students presented the first grade level show of the school year, “The Garden State,” sharing all of the amazing things in our home state. Special guests Jon Bon Jovi, Derek Jeter, and Buzz Aldrin, were among the many New Jersey native special guests and stars that arrived to share their stories!

On another note, you may recall that last month we held our Good Character Olympics. Congratulations to our fourth grade for winning the gold medal, coming from behind in points, and demonstrating great character moments throughout the two-week period.

What an incredible night of talent at MTV! Our students wowed us with piano performances, singing, dancing, gymnastics, twirling, break dancing, and more - each act showcasing confidence, creativity, and heart. The evening ended on a high note with our Fifth Grade Finale, as the Class of 2026 took us on a musical journey through their favorite songs over the years. March Reading Madness

March is shaping up to be a month full of literacy, joy, and school spirit at Mountview Road School! Our celebration began with an adorable rhyming performance by our Kindergarten students, setting the tone for a love of reading. We then came together as a school community for our One District, One Book selection, Key Hunters: The Mysterious Moonstone, followed by our exciting Student Council Read-a-thon and fun-filled spirit days. Students enjoyed cross-graded buddy reading, flashlight reading, and tons of other reading events. These meaningful experiences highlight the importance of reading while showing just how much fun learning can be!

We are proud to celebrate our success in the Kids Heart Challenge with the American Heart Association, and even more proud to share that we met our fundraising goal! A special thank you to Mrs. Mead and Mr. Nakonechy for leading the way and inspiring our school community to stay active, eat healthy, and care for those who need heart health support.

We are deeply grateful to all members of our school community for your generosity and support. Together, we showed that when we work with compassion and purpose, we can truly make a difference.

To celebrate this achievement, Mr. Nakonechy honored his fundraising promise by showing up in a dog costume, much to the delight of students and staff! The celebration brought plenty of smiles and laughter—especially when Officer Cardella playfully reminded him, “No dogs on school grounds!” It was a fun and memorable moment that perfectly capped off our success.

Ellie Leads the Way: A Journey to Graduation

Ellie has officially graduated from her training at The Seeing Eye. Over the past four months, she has mastered navigating busy city environments, escalators, suburban streets, and obstacle avoidance. One of her most important skills, intelligent disobedience, taught her to pause when a command may not be safe. Ellie passed all of her assessments with flying colors, and her trainer shared that she is exceptionally well-adjusted and highly responsive to a wide range of sounds and situations. She made such a strong impression that her trainer has even requested to work with Pepper, our new puppy in training, next, which is a wonderful reflection of the Hanover Township Schools community. Ellie is expected to be placed with a visually impaired individual by the end of the month, so stay tuned for an update on her next chapter.

This honor, sponsored by the New Jersey School Boards Association, celebrates students who truly illuminate our schools through their actions and character. We also congratulate Catherine O’Brien for qualifying as a regional finalist for the National Civics Bee. Catherine will compete in April with the opportunity to advance to the state and national levels, showcasing her commitment to civic learning and engagement. A Week of Spirit, Celebration, and Fun at MJS

This past week was filled with excitement and school spirit as we kicked off with a student council pep rally honoring students involved in athletics, clubs, and other activities here at MJS, as well as recognizing our Students of the Month. The energy continued with fun “Minute to Win It” games that brought smiles and friendly competition. Throughout the week, students and staff showed their spirit by participating in themed days, including college apparel day, wearing green for St. Patrick’s Day, and twin day. It was a fantastic week that celebrated our students and the vibrant MJS community.

Engaging Minds Through Hands-On Learning and Innovation

Our students are engaged in incredible learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. In Mrs. Lillo’s class, students celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by making homemade shamrock shakes, combining fun with creativity and collaboration. In the Technology Student Association (TSA), students are hard at work developing their projects as they prepare for the state competition at the end of April, building skills in innovation and problem-solving. Meanwhile, our 6th graders explored science through a hands-on investigation of mechanical weathering, shaking granite, halite, and marble in water to simulate stream movement, measuring changes in mass and observing how hardness impacts erosion. These meaningful experiences continue to bring learning to life for our students.

Our Grades 3–5 teachers continue to make great strides in implementing our ELA program. Under the leadership of our Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Mr. Aaron Wasserman, and with the support of our literacy coach and curriculum consultant, teachers are reflecting on lessons learned and continuing to refine their instructional practices. This ongoing work is helping ensure that students receive high-quality, engaging literacy instruction each day.

Our March 13 Professional Development afternoon was also filled with meaningful opportunities for staff. Teachers engaged in a combination of virtual sessions, collaborative team time, and independent professional work aligned to district priorities. Areas of focus included curriculum mapping, assessment tools, preparation for upcoming state testing, and professional responsibilities connected to instruction and evaluation.

Across both K–5 and 6–8 sessions, the afternoon provided valuable time for teachers to collaborate, reflect, and continue strengthening their practice in ways that directly support student learning.

We are grateful for Mr. Wasserman’s leadership and the continued dedication of our staff as they work together to support growth and success for all students.

A Community Vision: Safe and Strong Schools

We are excited to begin planning for a potential bond referendum in March 2027. While the vote is still a year away, we are committed to transparency and sharing information early, so our community understands what to expect throughout the process.

Hanover Township Public Schools has not held a bond referendum since 2002, and as our buildings age, critical infrastructure and security needs are hard to ignore. Community feedback during our Strategic Planning sessions also reinforced the importance of ensuring our facilities reflect the high-quality education provided in Hanover Township.

What’s next? This March, our district architect will submit a list of projects to the New Jersey Department of Education. The proposal will impact all four schools and focus only on critical upgrades, such as roofs, pavement, HVAC systems, security enhancements, electrical systems, and interior improvements, especially media centers and science labs. We anticipate many of these projects will qualify for significant state aid – up to 34% to help offset local taxes.

How can I learn more? Stay tuned! Once we receive feedback from the state, we will share detailed information about project costs and the potential tax impact. Our goal is to ensure every Hanover Township resident is informed and understands our district’s needs. You can expect a dedicated website with FAQs, community information sessions, local news updates, and more.

A stronger future is being built for Hanover Township Public Schools, and we look forward to continuing this important conversation and providing regular updates as we move toward March 2027.
