Hallinan Elementary
Hawk Squawk Newsletter 1/12/23
Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
I was delighted to hear the final Read-a-Thon totals. Elementary students logged in 3,043 books and helped raise $18,657! Huge thanks to LOHS DECA students Alicia Li, Jeb Scipio Del Campo and Sam Bohn for encouraging reading over Winter Break. The Read-a-Thon proceeds will directly support the Lake Oswego Public Library and the SMART Reading Program.
Libraries are amazing places - especially the beautiful Hallinan Library, and Mrs Landau, for which we are extremely grateful. Each month, Mrs Landau chooses books to read based on the character trait we are studying (PERSEVERANCE this month) as well as current holidays or events. January brings us lots of fun topics and books to ask your children about:
- Perseverance - Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett and The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires
- Martin Luther King Jr - Martin Luther King Jr by Pamela Walker and A Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr by David Adler
- National Soup Month - Mean Soup by Betsy Everitt and Stone Soup by Jon J Muth
- Chinese New Year - Chinese New Year by Aaron Carr and Coolies by Yin
Happy discussing and happy reading!
Melissa Griffiths

Missoula Children's Theater
If we are going to bring community theater to Hallinan, we need your help! May 1st through the 6th the famed Missoula Children's Theater is heading our way and we have several needs.
Housing needed!!!
Can you house one or two creative directors this spring? Missoula is sending two directors to audition and then teach up to 60 Hallinan kids how to perform. They will be working with K-5 and they need safe, comfortable housing to accomplish that huge feat. They each require their own room from April 30th-May 7th. Please see the Sign-up Genius below:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4aa9ae2aa3f49-host#/
Piano player needed!!!
We need a piano player to accompany the cast at a few rehearsals and at both performances.
The rehearsal time requirements are Wednesday, May 3rd from 5:15-7:15. Thursday, May 4th from 2:15 to 7:15. Then the dress rehearsal and first performance (at a school assembly) is on Friday, May 5th from 9:00 am to 2 pm. Saturday, May 6th the kids put on their final show for parents and family from 10 am-11 am.

Video Parent!!!
We would LOVE to capture one of the performances on video. According to Missoula Children's Theater, an amateur videographer usually captures one performance that the PTO can sell to parents. We will be hosting two performances. One on Friday, May 5th during school hours at 1pm and one the next day May 6th at 10 am which is for parents and family members. We would be asking you to attend the Friday performance so you can get the flow of the play and then video the parents and family performance.

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form
Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.
State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.
If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).
