KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES

This week, we celebrate and thank Ms. Petry (IST), Ms. Imhulse (Literacy Coach), Ms. Evangelista (CST), and Ms. Sickle (MTSS/504) for all they do to support our students, staff, and families. Their dedication to their roles and to our campus is exceptional, and we are very lucky to have them here. Happy Instructional Coaches Appreciation Day to the very best!

On Thursday, October 15th, Northwood will host Board Member and District 1 Representative Sara Gillespie’s Community Meeting. The meeting is open to all the schools she supports, so we will welcome additional visitors to campus that morning. There will also be FCS district staff and other guests in attendance. The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in our Media Center and will open with a musical performance by our AU Support students.

Mark your calendars! On Monday, October 19th, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Greg Tang, Jr. will be at Northwood for Family Math Night. Thanks to Northwood Foundation's longstanding partnership with and support of Greg Tang, he has made time in his schedule to join us, share interactive math games and explain effective math strategies with our families. Please see the flyer below for additional details. We hope to see you there! Paying for Greg Tang access is just one of the many ways our Northwood Foundation financially and academically supports our school!

As this issue is being delivered, our fifth-grade students and staff are returning from a fantastic two-day trip to Blue Ridge. The overnight trip would not be possible without the support of the fifth-grade team of teachers and all the chaperones. Lifetime memories were made, and I know all will sleep well tonight.

Color Day reminders: Wear green on Tuesday, October 13th, in support of Northwood's Kindness Month. Then, on Wednesday, October 14th, wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month for our campus PINK Out!

Enjoy the three-day weekend!

Heather Q. Rucker, Principal

CLINIC NEWS AND NEEDS

24-Hour Rule

As we are moving into the season for several viral illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19, we would like to remind you to keep your students home if they have symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and congestion, fever and chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return to school after their symptoms have improved and they have been fever free without medicine for 24 hours. The 24-hour rule also applies to vomiting and diarrhea.

Clothing Donations

Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes and appreciate donations of all clothing sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk.

SEPTEMBER PBIS CELEBRATION

Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade celebrated their positive behavior during our September PBIS celebration! Students enjoyed a special activity-filled recess with balls, jump ropes and hula hoops. They also got to play giant games like Connect Four, KerPlunk, Tetris, and more. It was a fun opportunity for students to run, play, and try new games beyond their usual playground activities. We are so proud of the way our students continue to demonstrate our PBIS expectations each day!

95% TO THRIVE: ATTENDANCE PRIORITIES AT NORTHWOOD

Our attendance focus this school year is “95% to Thrive!” We want our Explorers to be present for 95% of our school days. Excellent attendance ensures the best delivery of excellent instruction.

We understand that some absences are unavoidable. If your Explorer is absent from school, please email northwoodattendance@fultonschools.org to notify the proper staff.

Did you know that students can request up to 5 Participate Remote Learning Days per semester and receive attendance credit by completing academic work remotely? Parents can submit this form to their child’s teacher prior to an expected absence.

Your involvement as parents and guardians is an essential factor in creating a positive and engaging school environment. Together, we can foster an atmosphere where students are excited to come to school, engage in learning, and build a foundation for a successful future.

Click here to learn more at Northwood’s Attendance Webpage. In addition, FCS attendance policy information can be found at FCS Attendance Matters Website or by contacting our school social worker, Patrick Hartigan, MSW at hartigan@fultonschools.org

COMMON SENSE MEDIA: DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP LESSONS

In the Media Center, students have been learning about how to be safe, responsible, and respectful online. By the end of October, all students in grades K-5 will complete Digital Citizenship lessons from Common Sense Media on the following topics:

  • Healthy Habits
  • Privacy and Safety
  • Cyberbullying and Online Harm
  • Information and Media Literacy

As students spend more time online — whether learning, socializing, or entertainment — parents play a key role in reinforcing positive digital habits at home. By staying informed about topics like online safety, screen time, cyberbullying, and media literacy, parents can support their children in making smart choices and becoming responsible digital citizens. For conversation starters and family tips, please visit the resources linked above, including Common Sense Media’s Family Tech Planners and Tips & Resources page. These tools are designed to inspire meaningful conversations about technology use within your family.

FCS REDISTRICTING/CLOSURE AND THE CONSOLIDATION PROCESS

As you may be aware from a recent district message, Fulton County Schools will consider changes to attendance zones and evaluate school capacity through a redistricting/consolidation/closure process this fall. The process involves Geographic Region A (schools located south of the City of Atlanta) and Geographic Region C (schools located north of the Chattahoochee River). Because our school is located within one of these regions, we encourage parents and community members to stay informed, learn more, and provide input. Information about upcoming community forums is available at www.fultonschools.org/redistricting and in the attached flyer.

DISMISSAL CHANGES? MAKE THEM IN PICKUP PATROL

Northwood has partnered with PickUp Patrol to help us track dismissals. PickUp Patrol provides families with a convenient way to make changes to your child’s dismissal plans and helps ensure that students are accurately and safely dismissed each day.

If you need to change how your child should be dismissed, you should submit that information via PickUp Patrol before 1:30 pm on the day of the change, and our staff will be notified. We no longer accept dismissal requests via email or paper notes. Please do not email teachers directly.

All dismissal information and changes must be entered into PickUp Patrol.

If you have any questions, please first check the PickUp Patrol Parent Guide. If you need additional assistance, please reach out to Mrs. Robertson at Northwood’s front desk, robertsonl1@fultonschools.org.

CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND

Did you know? Our school community has a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account will be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!

Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Mrs. Rosa Gutierrez, our cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Mrs. Gutierrez, gutierrezabr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
