NEW Updates & Announcements
A Message from Our Principal, Mrs. Lucas
We appreciate you all getting the students to school on time in the mornings because we recognize the heavy volume of traffic in the mornings. Please remember the tardy bell is 7:25, which means the students should be in the classroom by that time. Your support is greatly appreciated.
As a reminder, we will administer the Student School Climate Survey to students this Monday, February 12th during Advisory. We want all students to complete the survey as it provides important data on areas where we need to focus our energy.
Kindness Week Spirit Days: February 12 - February 16
February 11 through February 17 is the Virginia Department of Education's Kindness Week. Kindness Week is to recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier and more inclusive place to live, work, learn and play.
SALC, Acts of Random Kindness and SCA have collaborated on a school wide week of positivity to include spirit days and "kindness challenges" to promote kindness throughout our school and our community.

BHS Student Spotlight
Select BHS Student Leadership Students Hosted a Workshop for RRMS Ambassadors
On February 2nd, select students from Battlefield’s SALC program went to Ronald Reagan Middle School to teach middle school student ambassadors in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels about important characteristics of a leader. First, Gabby Vincenzes and Taylor Coffee taught 7th grade about communication. In this they had the students play a fun game where they had to work together to copy down a picture. They also emphasized the importance of learning to effectively communicate with your students and your peers in a timely manner.
Next, students Ava Parker and Avery Taylor taught the 6th graders about finding their confidence. With it, they played a beach ball game that asked the students questions about what would make them confident and why, so that they could identify what makes a person feel good about themselves. The Battlefield students then joined with the Reagan students to color “Affirmation Hearts,” where they wrote down a positive phrase about themselves like, “I am strong.”
Lastly, Alanya Young and Lleyton Arnold presented to 8th grade about collaboration. With it they reviewed how you can complete big tasks with the help of others. They spent a good amount of their time introducing aspects of BHS's Leadership Program in hopes to continue to grow the program and complete many more feats.
Battlefield’s SALC class and program is grateful to Amy Covell-Sharek for hosting the students throughout the day, and for allowing the students to come talk to the Reagan ambassadors!

BHS Counseling Information
Academic Advising
Teachers have submitted course recommendations for next year and those recommendations are visible to students and parents/guardians in StudentVUE and ParentVUE, respectively. The next step is for students to review those recommendations and enter their preliminary course requests in StudentVUE February 10th - 16th. Individual academic advising meetings with students and counselors will begin on February 19th. Please refer to the email sent to all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade families on February 7th for more details.
The Battlefield school counselors will host two Academic Advising Q&A Sessions in the BHS library for parents/guardians on Tuesday, February 13th, 2:45pm-4:45pm and Wednesday, April 3rd, 2:45pm-4:45pm. Drop in during these hours with your prepared academic advising questions and speak with your student’s school counselors for a brief 3-5-minute conversation. Our College & Career Counselor will also be at these two events to answer questions in the same 3-5-minute format.
We hope you will be able to take advantage of one or both of these opportunities to meet with your student’s counselor regarding academic advising. Scheduling individual meetings outside of these dates will be challenging with such a high volume of families to serve. We look forward to partnering with you!

BHS Hosted 54 FTC Robotics Teams for the Chesapeake District Championship
This past Saturday, Battlefield High School, in coordination with Comet Robotics Team 1885 and Metal Jackets Team 2068, hosted 54 of the best FTC robotics teams from across Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and DC for the Chesapeake District Championship. For the past 5 months, teams have been engineering like crazy to produce robots worthy of such a competition. Three teams at the event were from Battlefield High School. It was an exciting day for all who attended. It was great to see both our school board representative Jen Wall and our Superintendent Dr. LaTonya McDade in attendance and supporting our Robotics programs.
Join us in congratulating Brian Shepard, FTC Coach Extraordinaire, and Lea May, our Amazing FRC Coach and Organizational Queen. The two of them worked tirelessly to put this impressive event together. Their character and teamwork are a true representation of our tremendous Robotics program at Battlefield.
Virginia State Police Visit Battlefield Classroom
Last week, the Virginia State Police paid a visit to Mr. Shepard's engineering classroom to demonstrate their use of robotics, especially as it relates to working with bomb detection and detonation. After a brief overview of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation program and a description of how the robots work, students were encouraged to operate the robots inside the classroom.
